I wish that something like this site had been around in 1974 when I got my first 8N. I have learned more in the past two months than I had in the 28 years I had my 8N. It would not have taken me:
1. 12 years to find my quiting problem was a "weak sister" ignition switch.

2. 15 years to find that setting points at .023 gap instead of .015 would last two years instead 2 months. (I think the lobes were worn badly.)

3. 18 years to finally discover that H10 sparkplugs were not dependable.

4. 28 years to find out that I did not need to keep the axle and brake shoes submerged in HYD fluid.

5. 2 years to find that the 2 year overheating problem was caused by radiator leaks allowing antifreeze and dirt to plug the radiator air flow. (Solved in 4 hours time with a piece of wire poking out the dirt accumulation.) A six pack of 16 ouncers helped considerably.

I had bought it "as is" from an tractor dealer. I gave 2400 for it and 28 years later he bought it back for 1200. Sounds like a good deal if you don"t factor in inflation. Except for the lift everything on it was worn out. I always managed to get it started until the last time when I tried everything I could think of. The compression was really bad but I had managed to shred with by pushing in the clutch and letting it rev up enough to struggle on through. He had a truck pull it around the shop about ten times and it finally started. He said that that pecans spewed out of the exhaust pipe. I guess a mouse had packed in enough to restrict the exhaust.
After 4 years I just had to have another 8N. Found one "as is"and am finding and trying to work on problems as they come up. I am finding a lot of great help from all the posts. Thanks.

it is a great place..I think the single most important thing I learned when I first found this site is that you don't have to pull the hood and radiator to change points on a front mount..seriously,thats how I used to do it..what a pain..I was scared of taking the distributor off and not being able to get it back in time..

I only had the hood off one time to overhaul the steering and am glad I never had to do that again.
I had a 63 Ford six pickup that I drove 80 miles round trip to work for 24 years. Just like the tractor I kept working on it. I guess you get attached to them although at times you want to take a sledge hammer to them when they quit on you. Good luck with your 8N. Regards...

You're right. I bought my 52 8N in 1984 and it was a struggle just to find parts around here. Nowadays there's no problem that can't be diagnosed in a very short time. As for the green machine, I agree. Great tractors. But for a lot less dollars some of us can get just as important a piece of history and have fun working with it.

I can't argue with that. We farmed with mules and horses until the mid-forties when we got a '39 Farmall B. Ran great all the time but it did take half a day or more to switch implements . Ever since I have loved old tractors. If it were not for my better half I would probably have every make of old tractors to tinker with. My goal now is, with the help of this site, to be able to get on the 8N and have it start the first time like Dell and the others. Regards....
