I just recently traded my low time Ford 1220 for a 1951 8N and 5 foot finish mower, This tractor runs great and starts easy with 20psi oil pressure at idle and 30 plus psi warm. I changed all the trasmission, hydraulic, and differential oil with new 90 wt mineral today, and decided to give the ol finish mower a go. The tractor pulled it well and mowed like a dream, no power loss, overtemp or oil pressure loss, After about 10 minutes of mowing I looked down and thats when my heart sank, My poor 8N was blowing oil out the breather like gangbusters, I shut her down and checked the oil level, very low now, was full before, I removed the fill cap, no blockage I could see, I left the cap off and started the tractor, no oil coming from the tube while just driving, however, when I turned the mower back on, Out came the oil again. I shut her down and pulled the plugs to do a compression check engine at temp, dry cylinder readings were 95-100-75-80 from back to front. I have only put 10 minutes on this tractor since I got her from the dealer, Am I screwed? This spell rebuild if I am assuming correctly. Any help appreciated. Thanks Rob

Ohhhhh noooo. Please be sure to let us know how it comes out. That's a real heart-breaker all right if it turns out it's what you think, but maybe it isn't. We'll keep hoping it'll be ok.

Dawn

I bought a 641 did the same oil would come out the breather tube.
turns out some had installed the wrong oil breather cap.
looks like it came off a old car.
the cap did not have a baffle in it changed to the correct ford breather cap & problem went away

If you have the wrong dipstick I may have the right on laying around.

Robert

If ya had not done it yet, I would drop what oil is left out, fill it with the prescribed quarts and then look at the stick. Go from there.

Maybe Christmas will come early.

Have you talked to the dealer yet? If your're lucky there's a 30 day warranty on it, or if the guy's a decent fellow, he'll give a look at it to see what's causing the trouble. If he won't do anything, I'd be bad mouthing him all over town!
He ought to be selling you something in working condition. Hopefully, it says how many hours were on the proofmeter when you bought it. It would definitely be worth a shot to talk to him. If there's no warranty, maybe you can work out a 50 - 50 deal on parts or labor to fix it. A dealer usually wants to keep his reputation intact, so you might get somewhere with that.
Good luck and let us know the outcome. But I would definitely talk to the dealer before doing anything to it at home.
Carl

Robert,

Your compression readings are better than mine. My 51 8N blows oil a bit - but nothing like you describe. How big is that finish mower!? I use a 72" Woods Model 2572. By the way, running my 8N in Low Range (Sherman)seems to decrease blowing oil out the breather.

You and I need to start thinking about rings! Good oil pressure, but crap compression readings...

Ray

Could the engine be overfull of oil, 'cause someone has used the wrong dipstick in the engine?

If not, it certainly sounds like excessive blow-by.

I dont think the oil level was too full, seeing how it still blows oil out without the level even showing on the dipstick.

Robert..... ..FYI, the N-Engine holds 6-qts oil with filter change and the dippstick is supposed to be 12"long. Ford compression specs: 90psi min (dry). your last-2 aren't too much to bragg about but could just be "stuck-rings" that is allowing excessive blow-by out yer only engine breather.

Don't panic yet!!!!

Who knows how long that tractor might have been setting and allowing the rings to gitt stuck.

Me? I'd suggest some Marvel Mystery Oil treatment (read instructions) down the sparkie holes to unstuck the rings, iff'n they're stuck. $10 (cheap) Beats a $1500 overhaul..... ...Dell

I like Dells idea because mine did that right after I got my 51N. The oil looked ancient so I dump in a quart of motor flush (kerosene) before I changed it. Knock on wood it hasn't done it since. Dump some Marvle in the spark plug holes some in your gas and some in the oil. I also use Rotella 15W40 oil because it is loaded with soot collecting detergent. These tractors are so good somtimes they heal themselvs.

Take the plugs out, pour in 4 or 5 table spoons of transmission fluid to each one, let it set for a few days.
If that doesn't fix it, do the same with brake fluid.
All of them rings wear the same or close to it.
All of them don't stick the same from setting up,
you need to figure out a way to get them loose.
If all of the above fails, rework the engine, $500 bucks worth of parts.
A pleasure to work on. Done my old model 8N twice, 22 years apart. Due to lack of a competent machine shop, I have never replaced the rod bushings, they have to be line bored to size.
Some of the finest engineering in the history of mankind.
Don't even ask me to work on a Ford car later than '65. Maybe a Ford truck up to '78.
I will work on most Chevy's that aren't front wheel drive with the sideways motor.
