Got the valves taken care of. Tomorrow I start putting it back together. I have a metal head gasket and wonder which way it goes....I suspect the folded over part around the cylinder area goes up toward the head. Am I assuming correctly??

PS:I will use the copper coat, too many blown head gaskets on this board lately.

Your assumption is correct, the folded over raised part should face up.

FWIW, I haven't rebuilt a N engine but on automobile engines I have rebuilt. Metal head gaskets that have a 'up' and 'down' side are stamped on there somewhere 'This side up', if it's not marked, the put it on any way you can with all the holes lined up.

Don't know if this helps, but I use the regular Ford head gasket and there is no up or down. Just so the holes match what's in the head and block. You can only put it on one way, can't you? Mmmmmm m. Have I been overlooking something?

You don't mention, but you refer to an N engine, don't you?

The rule is that unless the gasket (and it doesn't make any difference whether the gasket is metal, rubber, cork, or..... ..) is otherwise marked, the ribs on the gasket always point to the part being attached, No exceptions. And it does make a difference in many cases insofar as the initial sealing ability of the gasket. My $.02
