OT: Cutting hay

I desperately need to bale my bluestem in order to maintain my ag exemption for tax purposes. The man who will bale for me will not use his disc mower for fear of throwing rocks and damaging his equipment. He recommended that I use a sicklebar mower with my 8N.

I'm having trouble locating a sicklebar mower.

Does anyone have any alternative ideas? I'm west of Liberty Hill, Texas.

Thanks for your help,

Steve

Thanks to everyone for the help. I"ve located a sicklebar for $150 from a local legend (he reportedly has 105 antigue tractors - mostly rusted but very cool!) I like the bush hog idea. Next year I plan to put in a higher quality hay like bermuda.

You might check with your Extension office or the Texas Native Plants group down south of Austin before you switch from bluestem to bermuda. I think it will take a LOT more water to raise the bermuda, but bluestem will just grow practically for "free" in lots of Texas places. It's just a thought. :-) --Dawn

Steve..... ..ya gotta cut'n'bail inorder to keep yer ag-exemption right? I've cut many'n acre with a 5-ft brushhog behind my 8N and had it bailed. Granted it don't make for long leafy hay for nicely fed bales full of leafy protein, butt'cha gottta do what'cha gotta do.

Watch out, iff'n yer bailer is p!ssy about rocks damaging his haybine mower, then he'g gonnna complain about rocks and his tedder/rake too. And you will haffta rake yer cut grass into windrows so it can be picked up and baled.

...or... tell him NOT to mow so close to the ground with his haybine so he don't be for clippin rocks. Simple, eh?..... ..Dell

If ya have one of the Grand Old Bush-Hogs that u can remove the back panel so it won't chop the grass into infinitely small chips, u could use that 4 makin' hay. We used to do that after the sicklebar became unusable, it works. Not as good as the sb, but 4 tax purposes, it should get ya by!! CC

There where a good number of 3 point sickle mowers that where made that an 8N will handle well. I would check around at all the tracors dealers in your area. One of them should have one if they deal with used machines. If you where closer to where I am I could probably put one back togeather, I have 2 or 3 of them
