Thanks to all that replied and tried to help you guys are the tops, Just an update, I called the dealer back and he agreed to come and get the 8N and bring back my 1220 Ford, so I am no longer an 8N owner, I guess I will continue with my diesel tractor but my heart is for an 8N. Anyone interested in a 1993 Ford 1220 with less than 850 hours and a belly mower let me know. Again thanks for you assistance but the bottom line is the ol 8N has excessive blowby under load and it will have to be rebuilt.

I am so sorry to hear what finally happened with your N! But I'd like to buck the trend here and suggest you follow your heart as you decide what to do next. I know the tractor you have is a great one, and that it can really do a lot. But I also know what the N "feels" like -- the history and soul it has, and what that means. Like lots of other people here, I had a childhood dream of having and restoring and using an 8N, and fulfilling it has been one of the best things I've ever done (even though I have a long way to go to get to the "using" it part!). So if you feel that draw to get the N, please consider not giving up. I'm with you, all the way! :-) --Dawn

I am very glad to hear that you bought that 8N from a straight shootin' dealer. He did the right thing by you to take the N back and return your trade to you.

As someone else suggested here, if it is economically possible, you could ADD an 8N to your tractor collection, instead of selling the one you have, which really is a much better tractor in many ways.

Carl

This your 1220?

  • 1700#, 4WD
  • 17HP, 3cyl diesel
  • 9/3 speed manual transmission
  • Mid mount PTO with mower
  • Cat 1 3 point hitch with 540 RPM PTO
  • Independent hydraulics

If so, why would you want to trade it for an N?

Confused,

TOH

Yes That is the specs for my 1220, except mine is 2 wheel drive with a multi-speed HST transmission which makes driving it sweet, I hav always wanted a 8N and a finish mower and I decided to trade for This 8N and it just went to crap fast. At least I get my 1220 back though.

Well the 2WD is a bit of a hit as far as pulling power goes but the HST's a big plus in driveability (not to mention PS). As a finish mower goes, even with a smallish 48" mid-mount, the 1220 has got to run rings around an 8N dragging a 3 point rig. Personally, I might plunk down $3K or so for a bit bigger tractor to augment the 1220 but I'd never dump it for the old Ford.

I went the other way - bought a 6/2 speed 4WD Kubota B7200 to augment my 9N. About the same size as your 1220 (a little lighter but has a loader that makes up the difference) and frankly the 9N's been torn apart for painting and a overall facelift for about 2 years now and I'm in no rush to get it back together. Aside from a couple deep snows when the Kubby was over its head I've not had a job were the 9N would have had an advantage. In just about everything I do (no tillage) the compact is a better performer.

I grew up in an 8N/NAA world and I still hold a big fondness for them in my heart but they're not my first (let alone only) choice for daily chores. I value my time and personal safety too much. YMMV,

TOH

That's precisely why I have a 2N and a JD770 with a FEL. The 770 gets the work done around my place; but the 2N provides the grins.

Henry has the back blade and is limited now to driveway grading duty. When I need to move a little dirt or landscaping stones, I get John going. Some day, I'm going to find a belly mower and a mid-pto kit for it, then I won't have to drag the 3-point mower behind it, either.

Why not keep your diesel and add a 8n?
