I have an early 1949 8N.
The right side axle is starting to leak horribly.
First it was just a little that soaked the brakes.
Now it is running all over the rim.

I need to put seals and brakes on it.
I couldn't find Sure Seals for an 8N.
Are they available. Where. How much.

The wheel, hub, and axle nut are still tight.
No play in the hub or wheel. So it must be just the seal.

Thanks.

Check out John Smith's excellent step by step procedure on repairing rear axle seals on the 8N. Follow his advice and your leaks will be history. After clicking on the link go to the mainenance/repairs section then to rear axles seals. It works. Mine's been leak free for over a year.

Thank you for posting this, HVW. I know my rear seals leak a lot and that I'll have to do something about them. This site will really help!!!! --Dawn

Believe me, if you follow Johns Smith's well written directions it's a straight forward job. Almost enjoyable. The hardest part is moving the rear tires around.

I'm thinking of using that hoist set-up again to move those rear tires. The more I look at the them, the more I can picture myself getting smooshed! LOL

Sure seals are only for the 9N/2N tractors - sorry. Unfortunatly, the early 8Ns have only one rear oil seal, and is only so so at best when new. However, search the archives - I have seen a post by Zane I believe that he filled the area right behind the bearing with silicon to act as a second seal. Of course, you need to grease the bajeebers out of the bearing if you do this.

Keeping only 4 1/2 gallons or so in the hydraulic sump seems to help my 48 8N a bit on this issue.

Good luck,
Dan

Make sure that your hubs arent worn out. My 49 8N had worn out hubs. Se how many exposed threads you can see on your axle nut. If ya have a lot then the hub is worn out. If the hub is worn out there is no way you will ever get it to seal. I ended up replacing the hubs and seals now all is well.

I'm fairly certain my hub isn't worn.
Won't really know till I take it apart.
I guess in that case I will replace the hub.

I forgot all about John Smiths site.
I'll have to go read up on that.

Thanks.

My hubs were worn out also 49 model 8N, I have 2 brand new ones to replace them with when I get the trumpets back on from the lower lift pin replacement I am doing, that is in another topic, they were leaking bad.

When I jacked the tractor with the wheels just off the ground you could put your hands on top of the wheel, and your foot on the bottom of the wheel, and rock it back and forth, nuts were as tight as they would go, no doubt the hubs were worn out.

These taper fit spline hubs should be hard to get off, not come right off easily like mine would/did when the nut is removed.
