Since many have given me good advice here I'll continue my saga. Cleaned tank, all filters, new gas. Regapped points as they weren't opening up enough on two lobes. Gapped .015. Fired right up, ran smooth, lots of power! Halleluhia.

Made two passes on the lawn and it died. Wouldn't start for a few minutes. Started up, ran great and died. Three times. Good fuel flow.

Now it won't start at all. Rotor was loosey, goosey so put an old one in. No start. I'll buy a new one tomorrow.

I'm getting frustrated because the backfiring wasn't due to major problems but the cutting out and dying when it is running great has me baffled.

Thanks for all the help folks.

Check to make sure your points haven't slipped. My 9N had the same problems as yours is having. It turned out that the point screws kept backing out just enough to let things slip a bit - after only a few minutes of running. After replacing the screws, the backfiring, coughing, sputtering, and other ugliness went away.

Are you checking fuel flow 'to' the carb? or 'thru' the carb? I.E. is the carb bowl staying full?

If so.. jumper around the key switch.

Also make sure the little springy coil on the bottom of the ignition coil is making good contact.

Well I'll add to what the others have said. Could be the condenser or it could also be the ignition switch either one will cause that type of problem. I would first try a jumper wire on the switch then go to the condenser. The switch is the easy one to try first also

I would first replace the condenser on the points.

It may also be the coil.

Agreed, try a new condenser fiorst, if that fails you likely have a bad coil that the heat is affecting.

Anyway to test the coil before I buy another one? They are expensive and I've had two or three in the last few years.

If it's the coil, after it cools awhile it should start. They usually quit when hot. So if it isn't starting at all, anytime, I'm thinking probably not the coil. Check for loose wire in or around distributor.

If you have an O'reillys auto parts store close go there to buy your coils. They sell one with a life time warrenty on them. They do cost around $50 but with that warrenty its worth not haveing to pay for one again
