my 47 2n has a knocking sound from the engine that seems to be more noticiable under a load.the oil pressure gets down to 5-10 when hot and using bush hog. the engine does not smoke or use a drop of oil. is it safe to assume the main and rod bearings need replaced and how hard is this to do.thanks for any responses.

You are not going to get much "play" on your post because you are in essence asking "how do I rebuild and engine" when you start talking about replacing main bearings. Are you a person that can do the work yourself ? If you are and you don't want to rebuild the engine, pull the pan, rebuild the oil pump and just replace the rod bearings ( if you can without grinding the crank, mike measurements will answer that). If you want to replace the main bearings, now you are talking about some big time repair work, splitting the tractor, etc. etc. My $.02

thanks for your response timk.i was looking for reassurance from the n-experts out there to see if my troubleshooting might be correct. i am going to do a comp. test first and that will dictate whether i do a complete rebuild or do like you said and change the rod bearings. yes, i plan to do it myself. i work on jet acft for a living so would think i could figure out 40's technology.if i can't none of you will ever want to fly again!lol thanks again, roperboy
