I have my 8N back together from an overhaul except no sheet metal and no wheels. It is sitting on 4 heavy duty (3 ton) jack stands in my shop (concrete floor) I would like to attempt to start it and let it warm up, check it out and retorque the head. Make a temparary gas tank. Question is, anybody ever try this. Naturally the concern is the vibrations from running and will it vibrate off the stands! The stands are metal against metal on the 8N. In front, they are under the "notches" in the front axle. In the back, they are spread out just inside the fender mounts. Thoughts?

I was alone in the shop one day, working on an old Rambler, changing the generator as I recall when the engine suddenly started all by itself, ran a second and died. Key was off, I didn't do it, have no idea how it could be. Luckily it was in neutral or I'd been squished. Machines do things we don't expect, like fall, stop and, sometimes, start. Be careful. Block it up.

Thanks guys for your encouragement. Wanted to be sure I was not headed for a disaster! I will put some safety blocks under it "just in case". I will let you know how she runs.

popbreed, I have done it many times and would recomend you do it as well. I don't know how the other guys are setting the stands to have so many accidents, but if you use good stands there should be no problem. A fuel tank for an out board motor off of a boat is very easy to adapt for a temporary auxillary mounted fuel tank.

I would most likely git caught trying the same thing. I would block under the rear end good tho. I have a N on stands under a shed rite beside the shop, concrete floor. I wuz sit’in here play’in on the puter one night and it sounded like the shed feel down. The N fell off the jack stands. I have no idea why it did, it had set their all day no problem. It looked like sumone pushed it off the stands cuzz it moved a few feet to one side not like it fell straight down. I also had a F-150 ford pick’em up fall off a stand. I wuz knock’in the king pins out and bout the time I stepped back it fell, I had just had my head under the inner fender, You would think that after all the years I have werked on cars I would know how to set stands. it’s a said site to see a N all the way down on the ground. I did jack it back up and have it on stands rat’now but have it blocked under the diffi just in case. I don’t plan on run’in it but when I go back to werk on it I will add additional block’in I like my toe’s. Practice a little safety and block it then go fer it. Also werked with a guy who had a car fall on’em. He wuz remove’in the starter on a car that would not crank, sum how it started up and ran over him, he did not remove the battery cable. Play safe.

To be on the safe side I would put some wood blocks under it. That way if it was to fall off a jack stand the wood blocks would keep it from hitting the floor
