My (new) "48 8N steers hard to the right. I greased all fittings on steering and topped off the steering gearbox w/90w grease. Not much help! I got the nuts off the pitman arm - drag link, but the joint would not come apart with gentle persuasion (didn"t want to get to rough with it). I"m asuming a problem w/the gearbox or sectors. That"s 500 bucks or so. Looking for better (cheaper) options!

Update from novolts; Will Rogers once said that, "Good judgment come with experiance and a lot of that comes from bad judgment." Getting to my steering gearbox meant taking off a lot of parts that needed cleaning and painting. To save time for that I took my gearbox to a dealer in Union Hill, Ill. who was recommended to me. It"s just a couple of thrust bearings right? What could it cost? Besides, I told them that I could buy a whole new box for about $500. My fault, I didn"t say, "If it"s going to be more than that, call me." It was $851.45. "Please pass the nitro tablets."

You have the infamous bad top thrust bearing.

The steering box needs to be removed from the tractor so that the whole thing can be completely cleaned so that none of the old broken damaged bearing parts are left in the housing when it is fixed. No need to remove the two pitman gears. Only the top four bolts and the worn and ball sector etc. The gear timing will have to be correct when it is re assembled.

Don't let anybody talk you into using the nylon bearing substitutes. Not good!

Thanks Zane! I"m a novice, but I"m willing to take it on(my grandad taught me how to drive on an 8n. I"ve wanted one every since). Is it necessary to remove the whole gearbox from the tractor, or just the top steering shaft tube?
