You guys are a great source of information and help. Even though I've owned my 9N for onver 17 years I'm just starting to understand it. Thank you. Here's a run down of my problems and solutions if it may help anyone else.

The progressive backfiring was caused by the points slipping and not opening on two lobes reliably. The problem was progressive and eventually it became unrunable and caused overheating and the degrading of the coil. If I had known earlier I would have regapped the points and it would have run like a champ and I wouldn't have had all of the ignition problems that followed. I had visions of stuck valves, worn cam shafts, selling it for junk, etc.

Today I replaced the condenser (no spark), regapped the points (no spark), new coil (good spark and fired up instantly and ran great). I cut my grass for the first time in 6 weeks.

I bought another "weak sister" and sometime I'll replace her just to be safe.

Thanks again guys.

RD, mind the bushings, especially the outer bushing, in the front mount distributor... they run kinda dry and do wear out causing erratic points operation.... It's tough getting old.... I was born in '45.... BTDT... :-) duey

Forgot to add, the front mounted distributor seems to be a quirky invention, a little tempremental and delicate. My next quest is to find a decent 8n side distributor to keep as a spare tractor.
