In addition to the Everett transmission, my tractor also seems to have a Sherman transmission installed. I'm pretty sure it does, as there is the cable operated shifter in the right side of the instrument panel. Of course it is frozen up as I have read it would be. It's stuck in the pushed-in position.

I think it is a step-down transmission, as the fastest my tractor will go in 4th gear is 6 MPH. Does this sound right for the underdrive Sherman?

I guess I am going to have to split the tractor to fix the frozen shift cable. Any words of wisdom on this process?

Thanks - George

George,

The Step-down DID come in 'Cable shift'. VERY RARE. I've owned (and sold) both types. Ratios were 1.55:1 and 2.42:1. 6 mph in 4th indicates to me the latter. I see, in my crystal ball, a tractor split in your future. The Sherman SHOULD be painted red when you get in there. Take the cable to any GOOD truckers' shop and they will duplicate it for you. Red Rock USED to have them but my latest info from Phil is that there wasn't enough interest so they are NLA.

George..... .ah yes, the infamous Sherman cable shifter. From what I understand, the cable shifter was only available for a short time for the OVERDRIVE version of the dealer installed Sherman aux trannys. According to the "charts", the OverDrive tranny had 0.669:1 step-up ratio and a MAX SPEED of 23mph in 4th-OD (engine 2200rpms) but 4th-UD would be about 11mph. (4th-straight about 15mph) And with the cable shifter, its balls-to-wall for OverDrive and OUT for straight. third party image

You definitely do NOT have a 'Creeper' with that top speed, AND the Creepers did NOT come with cable shift. ONLY the 'Steps' did. MAYBE....IF you are one of the lucky ones, you can unscrew the knob, remove the cable from the dash and 'prop' it/suspend it so that you can start dribbling a lubricant down the inner cable to a pont where it will eventually free up. I HAVE managed that ONCE in 4 trys. Worth a shot if that cable is the ONLY reason you have for splitting an otherwise good running tractor.

You're right - actually after looking at the ratio on the creeper I knew it couldn't be one. It *is* a step-down though.

I didn't have to split the tractor - I went in through the top where the steering gear goes. Hat to have it off anyway and luckily could get to the cable from there.

Believe it or not, with a bunch of solvent, oil, and compressed air, I was able to get the cable working again.

Yep. The RED paint gives it away even without any other evidence. Good work on getting the cable freed up! They"re not as hard to get made or as expensive as you"d think but why spend $ that you don"t have to. Let us know if you need anything else.
