I have a 52 8n, 6volt, solid state ignition...
Tractor overhaul including rebuilding the starter/electrical system and Engine rebuild about 5 years ago...
Ran fine when I parked it about 4 months ago...
Tried to start her last week and all I got was a slow wuh -wuh -wuh ...
Always carry another battery so I tried it and still got the wuh -wuh -wuh....
So I pulled both batteries and the starter and brought them home...
Had the starter to the shop who notices 4 spots on the comm that should signs of carbon, had comm cut and everthing tested and found no problems...
Clean all battery / connections on the tractor reinstall battery and starter....
All I got was the slow wuh -wuh's...
Go to TSC who happened to have a new starter and installed new starter and next battery....
All I got was the slow wuh -wuh's...
Remove wire to regulator and attach 3rd "Optima" battery directly to new starter, monitored volts on battery...
Got slow wuh -wuh's while measuring 5.65 volts on the battery...
Remove all plugs and motor turns fast...
Replace 1 plug at a time and the cranking got progressively slower until all plugs were back in and got the slow wuh -wuh's....
When I had the plugs out and cranked it, I got no fluid coming out of the plug holes, so I am at a total loss as to why she won't crank with the plugs in !!!!
ANY HELP / SUGGESTIONS more then welcomed as I am in new waters here, never experincing something of this nature ...
Sorry so long but wanted to give as much detail as possible....
Thanks in advance ...Alan

So.. how are those battery cables? Wimpy 12v ones.. or big meaty 1/0 cables like your thumb?

Hows the ground braid? Hooked to clean metal?

Hows the starter to block mating? clean or cruddy?

What amps the starter pulling when cranking slow?

If ya put a new starter on and it cranked same way.. guess what.. it 90% probably aint the starter... it's probably a ground or wireing isue.. like insuficient wires / bad / dirty contacts.

Now that you have a battery and starter collection.. invest in a piece of sand paper , and perhaps new wires and or terminal ends and give er a test.

Thanks for the suggestion....I have 4 other tractors that are running and 1 battery that I carry in case I need a jump. That "loose" battery is an always charged "Optima" battery. I pulled those batteies out of my other tractors for these "tests". All the cables are the beafy 6 volt cables of the right size. I did clean all the connections with a wire brush on a drill, including where the ground cable connected to the chassis. After doing all that and still got the same result I bypassed it all by connecting an external battery, not using any of the existing cabling, directly to the new starter with high quality professinal grade jumper cables, and still got the same result. I put one end of the jumper cable on the stud going into the starter from the starter switch and the other end on the mounting stud of the starter. Being a new starter ther was no paint on any surface so I was sure I had a good connection.....
Any other suggestions greatly appreciated...Thanks...Alan

Alan..... ..NOT hydro-static lock.

You write..... .."I put one end of the jumper cable on the stud going into the starter from the starter switch and the other end on the mounting stud of the starter"..... ...uh? That is confusing.

Jumping an 8N is really trivial. Make certain yer tranny is in NEUTRAL. Then clamp one of yer battery jumpers directly to the BIG starter motor stud where the flat copper buss-barr also connects. Then connect yer other jumper clippie to enny convenient GROUND. (I usually clamp onto the steering rod and wiggle a little thru the rust or paint) NOTE: starter motor don't care battery polarity. Now connect the OTHER end of eather jumper to enny battery post.

Check to see that yer tranny is in NEUTRAL. Ignition switch ON, carb-throttle lever about 1/4. And CONNECT the LAST jumper clippie to yer last jumper battery post. Starter motor should ZING. Iff'n NOT, ya most likely didn't gitta good clamp of yer jumper clippies. But iff'n yer certain yer jumper battery clippies are connecting good and it don't zing, then, yeah, bad starter motor.

ME? based upon yer convoluted description of jumping the BIG STUD TWICE, I'm gonna display my amazing abilities to mind read and GUESS you were actually jumping AROUND yer 3-terminal roundcan solenoid and that the INTERNAL GUTTZ of the starter solenoid are CRUDDED-UP. New 3-terminal tractor starter solenoid $10 (cheap)..... ..Dell, the amazing

It sounds to me like you might have a couple of bad windings in the armature.Did the person check it on a growler useing a flat metal blade over the armature while in the magnetic field of the growler? The blade should buzz & vibrate while the armature is turned in the magnetic field of the growler if you have bad windings. The black spots indicate this.I have never seen a armature on a generator or starter that was not bad when it has burnt segments on the commutator.
