I picked up a new toy over the weekend, a Ferguson T0 30. Looks pretty good, runs good, one new rear tire, one good rear tire, new front tires, good hydraulics, recent governor o/haul and even has working brakes. Anyone have info on these? serial number location and description etc.. I thought the price was pretty fair, $1500. I went to town to get ziplock bags and came home with a tractor. Sometimes I just don't understand why my wife is always mad at me.

Looks good, Rocky !! I was looking at one of those a couple of weeks ago. If I'd had the chance to buy it for what you paid it'd be at home now too. Sounds like a good deal !!

WOW! When *I* go to town for plastic bags, I just wander around until I give up trying to remember what I went to town for. LOL

That's just a beautiful machine! No wonder you snapped it up! Congratulations!!! --Dawn

Rocky, I know what ye mean, that sounds like some of the things I do. I don't worry about it, she always gets over it.

And here's my TO-30 that I acquired last month when my uncle died. It was running when he started having health problems several years ago. It hasn't been run since and now the engine is locked up. I'm still soaking the cylinders in ATF, but pretty soon I'm going to give up on that idea and pull the head.

The serial number is on a tag on the dash, above the steering column. The tag should have a "TO" printed on it followed by a stamped s/n. Mine is a 1952, s/n 80236 (if I remember right).

Jim,

Nice looking TO 30, but be careful with the amount of force you create in breaking the engine loose. It is a Z-129 Continental overhead valve engine. It is a wet sleeve engine meaning thast there is no block casting along the sides of the cylinder bores. The sleeves are set in a rubber o-ring at the bottom of the water jacket area and are held in place at the top by the head sandwiching them into the block casting. If you move the sleeve with the head off, you will leak antifreeze into the oil pan and may not be able to get it to seal again. I would try to free it up with the head on it to keep the sleeves from moving.

Good Luck!

Thanks Paul. I did not know that about the Z-129 engine. Do you have any tips or tricks for freeing the engine up with the head on? I've been trying the ATF for several weeks. Maybe the next move is to remove the starter and pry on the flywheel with a prybar?

Don't worry to much about the sleeves if you end up pulling the head. If a sleeve moves, you can just pull it all the way out, clean things up, replace the O-rings and reinstall it. Use some Vaseline on the O-Rings to help them slide back in. You should drain the antifreeze from the engine before you do any of this of course... Here is a picture of the engine with all the sleeves removed. Makes it easy to get a clean water jacket! Have fun with your TO30.

You should have bought the ziplocs, that way you have someting to put the bolts in whenyou tear her down. Either way you came out ahead.
