I am trying to date an 8N that I recently purchased that has a strange serial number. What I see stamped on the side of the block is "1433-620AT". The engines appears to have been changed out at some point as it is blue while the rest of the tractor is the standard red and gray. The letters "8N" and a "D" is cast in the bell housing where the starter goes in. Using Smith's Old Ford Tractor website, I note that the top link rocker is a multi-holed one so I am leaning to a 1949 model. Could this strange serial number be a number assigned to a new block that was installed? Any help appreciated.

Ron, you are weird. Do not date a tractor. Date a woman. Trying to determine a tactor's age is OK, but do not ask a woman's age...

Look for casting dates on the other castings. There seems to be no standard as far as I can tell on the location on the tranny and diffy. The axle trumpets should have casting dates along the side, usually on the front side. Day (can be two digits) month (using letters) and year (single digit) are normal, but often the trumpets will have the full date or something easier to read.

I had not thought about looking for dates on the castings but good idea! That would probably give me as close to the year of manufacture as I can get. Thanks.

It does sound to me (not an expert!) like the engine had to have been switched out on that at some point. I was wondering at first if the engine is from one of the N's made to use as a tug (for aircraft and other things). I know there were some specialty N's made and that their serial numbers are really different, so if one of those engines got put into your tractor, that would explain it. I looked in the archives under "tug" and found that some have a serial number BNO, but I really thought I remembered some others in other discussions on the forum. Maybe someone else will remember. --Dawn

Dawn, thanks for the reply. These numbers are even in a different "font" than you usually see on an 8N motor. They are smaller and very distinctive stamps. I'll check out the tug information but I'm thinking the numbers may have been added by a rebuild shop or the engine was a new Ford "crate" motor. I don't have a clue how, or if, a new motor would have been stamped.

The old tractor runs great though. I love these old 8Ns. I've refurbished around eleven or twelve of them in the past four years using them until someone stops and offers to buy the tractor usually while I am mowing my property which is on a major highway. Nothing prettier than a freshly redone little red-belly in the bright west Texas sun.

You betcha!! And I do miss that warm Texas sun on the kind of cold, blustery day we've had today. It's like a Blue Norther came through about the first of October and just hasn't finished sweeping on out yet! LOL

It was in the 70s here today in the Texas Panhandle but we paid for it with high winds in the afternoon and evening. Tonight the wind is howling like a pack of wild dogs. It won't be long before the snow and ice are here. I'm headed for Albuquerque for the holidays. Maybe it's nicer weather over over there. At least I was able to get my tractors running and in the shop before any bad weather hit. Right now I've saddled myself with three 8Ns and one Super 55 Oliver. It will be a tough spring for this old codger.

First you approach the 8N and tell it how you feel then ask it out for a oilchange and a movie. And when the time is right and you will know..show it love..

I wouldn't mind soooo much dating an 8N. Though maybe it wouldn't be too comfortable snuggling up to one in bed on a cold January nite.

This date's name is Rustie Ford but I'm a bit too old for courting. However, the old girl and I are about the same age and neither of us smoke. Hmmmm. Naw! My wife would probably object.

i cant help you with your stamped engine number. If you go back to smiths web site you will find more clues. Script fenders, shifter knob, proofmeter, steering box style, clutch linkage etc. Hth

I'll have to check out the other things at Smith's. I know there is script only on the hood, a molded-in-the-stick shifter knob and no proofmeter but I'm not sure about the steering box or the clutch linkage. I may not ever know what year engine was reinstalled. Thanks for the reply.
