I am trying to post a picture of the sleeve that I broke during installation. It went in halfway okay, but from that point, it got very tight. I was really pounding on it when the top edge broke. I finally got a friend to come by with a portable welder and he removed it. Will post more pictures later.

I too freeze them, in a cold freezer, preferably a deep chest type, but as long as it is cold enough, I don't guess that matters much.

I also have the block and the freezer close by each other, and work one at a time.

I also coat the outside of the sleeves with glycerin right before installation.

You can usually find glycerin at older drug stores.

I coat the hole in the block with glycerin also, beforehand.

Put the sleeve in your freezer, install quickly with a flat piece of oak.
You may also warm the block

Forget the freezing technique. Anyone that technique worked for would have found they'd gone in just as easily without the cold-treatment. (The transfer of the latent heat from the atmosphere and the block is almost instant to the thin-walls of those sleeves...and the sleeves almost immediately assume their ordinary size.)
Chances are that the block was not clean and residue was shaved and built up beneath the sleeve as it was driven in. Be certain to lightly hone the block, and then wash it out with solvent before installing the sleeves. DO NOT USE A TYPICAL RED SHOP TOWEL OR ANY OTHER LINT-LEAVING RAG TO DRY/CLEAN OUT THAT BLOCK. Lint will roll up and be forced between the sleeve and the block as the sleeve is being installed resulting in the experience you already know about.
Don't use any lubricant (other than alcohol) or sealant either. Simply have a clean hole, a clean sleeve (alcohol works good) and drive the sleeve in as continuously/smoothly as you may.

It worked wonderfully for me 25 years ago and then again last year on the same tractor.

BTW:

glycerin is a form of alcohol...

Glycerol, also well known as glycerin and glycerine, and less commonly as propane-1,2,3-triol, 1,2,3-propanetriol, 1,2,3-trihydroxypropane, glyceritol, and glycyl alcohol is a colorless, odorless, hygroscopic, and sweet-tasting viscous liquid. Glycerol is a sugar alcohol and has three hydrophilic alcoholic hydroxyl groups (OH-) that are responsible for its solubility in water. Glycerol is prochiral.

Ok Dunk, how did you get that picture up there? I am still trying to figure it out, but just aint gettin there. I have tried to figure out how to use the hosts here, but, no go. I have never done a photo post on a forum, just e-mail attachments. I cant even figure out how to resize the pictures to be smaller so they will be a better size for the forum. But thanks for puttin that one up. I have some more I would like to put up too.
