I have a 8n with a front mount distributor. have repaced everything electrical, plugs points condencer coil cap rotor and wiring harnass. spark is there butfeel it maybe a little weak. main concern is compression. check with compression testor and barely moves needle. can put my finger over plug hole and stop air flow. this does not seen right to me. i have been told it maybe posible head gasket. to back up a bit the tractor was running ok and then it started missing badly made it back to the house. after that it would not run. been trying to get it to run again but no luck any suggestions

I am thinking there is possibly a weak or broken valve spring. Pull your valve covers off and see if they are all working, very easy check.

thank you for your help. from reading your replies i may have stuck valves. it did sit idle for a long time. in reading the forum archives i seen where a lot of guys put marvel mystery oil or tramsmission fluid in the cylinders. after you pour it in and let it sit how do you get it out. just crank the engine or will it drain down thru the motor. this may be a dumb question but if it takes more than a screwdiver to fix it im in trouble but trying to learn

After your MMO sits for a spell, just crank the tractor up, what dosent drain down will burn off. Dont get worried when she smokes for a while. The MMo that drains down will mix with your oil in your pan. No problem.

thanks for your replies. Im good enough mechanic to be dangerous so any comments are welcomed. In answer to greg question there is no compression on any of the cylinders and it did not over heat on me the day it went down. thaks for your replies.

No compression on all cylinders = head gasket.

I have NEVER seen a head gasket blown on ALL cylinders.

However, it's not uncommon to see a gasket blown between a pair of adjacent cylinders.

If the tractor has sat without running for quite a while, a bunch of stuck valves, or valves with crud trapped between the valve and seat is WAY more likely.

RJ..... ...all the HOTTEST SPARKIES in the world WON'T START an engine with LOW COMPRESSION. (self-admitted no compression readings)

What else is it that you ain't telling us?

You admit that it started running ruff out in the field and it barely made it back to the barn. Why does OVERHEATING and BLOWN HEADGASKET pop into mind?

The ONLY CURE for LOW compression is NOT HOTTER SPARKIES; its the dreaded headgasket replacement. ($20, cheap)..... ...respectfully, Dell

No compression on all cylinders?? Or just one? Sounds to me like a valve or valves are stuck open.
