The diagram showing a 12 volt alternator's connections that was posted several weeks ago was very helpful. I have forgotten the number of the diode, though.

Could someone either re-post the diagram, or remind me the number of the diode?

As I recall, the white stripe goes toward the alternator. Right?

I'm the one who suggests that diode.

It's ratings are WAY overkill for this application, but I've never had one fail.

OCCASIONALLY, I have seen a diode with a lesser PIV rating fail. There are voltage spikes present in the ignition and charging systems, and the high PIV rating eliminates any problems with that.

More than likely, you'll never have a problem with the 1N5402, but the price difference in price is so little, I simply use the 1000 PIV units.

Anyone needing a CHEAP source for the 1N5408's can email me.

I use radio shack diode 16-2772 if memeory serves me right that is. I keep a pack on hand almost all the time but I also do a lot of 12 volt convertions

Peter,

You can also use a #194 lamp in place of the diode. These are commonly available at Radio Shack and elsewhere.

Peter,

According to my notes, the general consensus here is to use a 1N5408 Diode with the band toward the alternator.

However, I cannot get a 1N5408 at my local Radio Shack. They do stock a 1N5402 and the only difference I can see is that the 1N5402 is rated at up to 200V and the 1N5408 is rated to 1000V.

I have a 1N5402 ready to install on my 48 8N one of these days when I have some spare time...
