Hello just getting into these old ford 9n tractors. What I need to know is this: what is the number one cylinder and 2,3 and 4. Starting with the front cylinder.

(Do remember to take me with a grain of salt)

One thang about it, it can all be up to your own perspective, and long as you follow *all* the way through with the same perspective...

You do not have to believe in, or thank from, the same box that everyone else thanks in, just be sure to keep your ducks in a row when you get outside it.

Here let me show you how that werks.

Folks have ENOUGH trouble getting it right with the MANUFACTURER'S designation of numbering the cylinders from the FRONT.

WHY make it even more confusing?

For that matter, if you want to be silly about it, leave the cylinder numbering as the manufacturer intended, and make the firing order 2-4-3-1. As long as any ONE of those wires is on the correct plug and nipple, the others will be correct, too. Or, 4-3-1-2, or 3-1-2-4, or back to 1-2-4-3!

Exactly!!

For the purpose of trying to give a working understanding.

One that you appear to have from your last paragraph.

It's like the standard Chevy V-8 firing order of 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

Certain Ford V-8's have the CYLINDER NUMBERING set up entirely different, with a different firing order.

If you "forget" it's a Dorf engine, and mentally number the cylinders in the Chevy convention, and then install the plug wires following the Chevy firing order, all will be well.

Just some silly stuff manufacturers do, rather that stick to some kind of a standard convention between brands.

Schools don't teach students to understand, or to think about why, or even what, they want to turn out carbon copies.

They teach "memorize this", and when asked this question, be able to put "this" down on a test.

I have a problem with that.

I think they should teach thinking, and understanding what is happening, and why, some times the best way to teach that, is to show the same thing from different angles, and different views.

This country is going downhill for some reason.

God Bless America.

Ooopps... I may not be through yet...LOL

I don't like Ford Motor Company.

These old tractors were built on principals of a great man!!! One that I admire to no end. (all of that was lost many years ago)

They are a work of genius unheard of at the time.
(Don't leave Ferguson out of that)

IMO they are very much responsible for the Great America we knew a couple of decades back.

Principals that have been replaced by a "use it, throw it away, and buy another" society.

I will quit now, before I get depressed about it.

Hey hold the phone "RockyMO", the firing order on all N series tractors is 1-2-4-3 as listed in the I&T shop service manual FO-4. Under the Condensed Service Data section on page seven in my book dated current up to may 2005.

I stand corrected, Apparently my brain and fingers stopped working together for a while. Bad fingers, badd.

Starting at the front of the engine (the one with the fan belt, radiator etc..) they go in order 1, 2, 3, 4. Pretty simple eh. The firing order however is 1,3,4,2 coming off of the distributor cap.
