pat, you can get it off, the bendix has to clear the flywheel and its a very small space. hold the starter level with both hands and pull out as far as you can to the right side of the mounting hole so as to clear the flywheel, at this point you are as close as you can get to clearing it and getting it out. you will have to jiggle it up-down-back and fourth and it will come out with patience and a few choice words. hope this helps. Many tractors have had the opening in the bellhousing "relieved" with a die grinder, to make more clearance for the starter drive to come out.

If your's hasn't been opened up a bit, you may need to remove the block drain petcock and remove the bolts securing the oil filter canister, and move it out of the way a little, to make room to wiggle the starter around enough to get the drive out of the bellhousing.

(NOTE... as soon as the starter is moved forward enough to give adequate clearance, thread a 5/15" nut on one of the starter's "through bolts", so the starter doesn't disintegrate into three parts while you're trying to remove it.)

5/15".... I LIKE it! Think there would be a market???

Or, would 1/3" be a more marketable number???

Oh, well, not quite as bad as when I posted about HOOTER spark plugs! I got quite a few emails over that gaffe!
