Maybe you can help me. I am reassembling 9N brakes and the two return springs on the adjustment side are identified in the I&T manuel as springs-parts#'s 9N2034 and 9N2036. The instructions also distinguish between the "upper spring" and the "lower spring". I do see that one spring is fabbed out of heavier gauge wire and is formed to a larger diameter. Now,could you tell me....which is the "top" spring, and I presume the unique spring stays TOP on both sides. I can't see the distinction in the illustration provided in the manuel nor do my 64 yr. old springs give any hint of being color coded as the manuel also indicates. Thanks in advance for your help!!

Brian,
Along with Hobo's reference of Jeb's post, this pic from the Master Parts Catalog (my greasiest book) may be of use.
Russ
P.S. Yeah, I got a laugh out of trying to find any color on my springs, too.

The green spring goes on the top. Red on bottom. Green spring is the stronger. Thicker wire. HTH. John, Pa

So, not to be dense..... .....Do we all agree that the stronger small spring is on the top on both sides? the shadetree tractor lover.

I just put new brakes on my 2n and don't know if it's ever been apart before but the stronger spring was on top on both sides. After thinking this can't be right, I scratched my bald head a while and figured it was right because the stronger spring would hold the shoe against the cam adjuster thingy on the top and hold the shoes centered. After I had it back together I adjusted the little cam thing until the top shoe touched the drum and backed off a little until no drag was felt, then adjusted them with the main adjuster.I did install the springs exactly as jeb2n described.

Brian..... ...not intimately familiar with the 14" 2N spring sizes and since BOTH the green 9N2034 spring and the red 9N2035 spring are listed as being 4.56" long; gonnna guess that due to the "wedging" effect of the forward motion of tractor momentum against the LOWER SHOE during application will require a STRONGER return spring. That would be the thicker heavier RED SPRING for the BOTTOM brakeshoe.

Usually, most shadetree mechanics do ONLY 1-Brake at a time, incase they gitt confused on how things go together, they can consult and verify with the un-assembled brake on the OTHER SIDE. Simple, eh?..... ...respectfully, Dell

Yeh! That was our plan. And,you hit it right on....Shadetree mechanic. Gotta 'splain though. This little project is in conjunction with the project of totally going over this machine. I DO mean totally. We are running out of seasonal ability to complete (the tractor is on jackstands in front of my shed, and the sandblast/paint process has been keeping these shadetree people busy. Anyway..gotta say that in the interest of getting done to the point of getting it to roll (inside for the upcoming Pa.winter)I did dissamble the one I had been saving for a "something to look at". And of course the whole time thinking that the parts and assembly manuel would be clear in the re-assembly. You gotta wonder..... .Why do people do this to themselves..... ..... ..

Respectfully, the shadetree tractor lover.

I have total CRS most times. As my better half says..thank god your head is attached.
What saved me, was taking pics of everything along the way. Yep, at times, it was a pain to clean hands b/4 touching the camera.
HTH....good luck.....don t. .....

BTW....you're doing brakes, did ya fix the rear axle seal leak?

I ran threw the arcives and did a search fer Jeb2N, he rebuilt a 2n a few years ago and posted lots of good info fer a 2N. I know he had a real good pix of the 2N brakes but have not found it yet
typed jeb2n and got 11K hits, refinded it to "jeb2n brakes" and got 274

Dunky..... ...theres a world of difference between the self-energizing 11" 8N-brakes shoe design and the 14" 9N/2N fixed pivot design. Nice color photo..... .respectfully, Dell
