Could someone please tell me what grille a 1939 9N should have? I have one, ser. #5934, and would like to get the proper reproduction grille for it. I believe it should have horiontal bars but am not sure. I have looked on Smith's site and researched it in the books but there doesn't seem to be (that I have found anyway) a difinitive answer to when they went from horizontal to vertical.

Thanks in advance for the thoughts.

Your 1939 grill should look like the one in this pic and should be made of aluminum. Since they were aluminum and brittle, they often cracked and was replaced with the steel versions you are used to seeing on the N Series tractors. This makes originals extremely expensive - luckily they can still be found in the aftermarket (but still kinda steep in price IMO).

Dan

Dan, just for my own information, do they make steel repo grills that are in the horizontal pattern of the original aluminum ones?
That could be an option if they are available and one of those pricey originals isn't.

Carl..... as far as I know, they are not available. If they were, they would cost a lot more than the aluminum.Since the later steel grilles will fit,why not just use one of them, but you won't have horizonal bars.We stock all grilles for 9-2-8ns and they are made right. don b

Thanks for the information. I'm surprised that steel would cost more than aluminum, since you get a lot more for scrap aluminum than scrap steel at a salvage yard.
I wasn't in the market for a grill, at any rate. I have an 8N with a loader and the grill had been removed before I bought it. I recently made a decorative radiator cover to replace the functional but ugly 1/4" hardware cloth that had been installed as radiator protector.
Probably next spring I'll be redoing rear seals etc and will keep your outfit in mind for parts.

If anybody made one I'd expect it to be Dennis Carpenter. I checked his site and he doesn't offer one for the '39. I think he starts at '41.

I have never seen or heard of them if they do.
