During the rebuild of my hydraulics and PTO assembly on my 1941 9N, I was never able to determine the proper ring gaps for the hydraulic system's piston rings. I have the original 3-ring set-up and none of my overhaul manuals, nor a search of the Archives ever showed what the ring gaps were supposed to be. Well, just for laughs, here's what I found on my tractor:
Original gaps = 0.0196" (average of the three rings).
New ring gaps = 0.0173" (average of the three rings).
I pushed the piston and each ring into the cylinder up to the first ring groove, thus ensuring that I had "squared up" the rings. I then inserted various shims to determine the gaps.
Hopefully this will help anyone else out there! Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!!

Rich, you are really working hard. I have gone the "easy out" way by using the NAA rubber o-ring and leather backer. Your commendable effort to establish a specification is interesting but I will still use the NAA setup for every N that I might have to rebuild.
