I am going to change my oil in the rear end of my tractor. I am going to put in gear lube. Also if there is sludge in the bottom how should I get that out do I have to take the pto out and how do I do that. Do i run kerosene in it to clean it out or what.
Shawn

I Paid $52.99 At Tractor Supply For 5 Gal Of Gl-1 90 Wt. Mineral oil. Thats about $12.00 More Than My Local Farm Store Has 5 Gal. Of Harvest King Gl-5 I would Think Mineral Oil Would Be Cheaper? But I Guess Not. Anyhow I Got The Right Stuff. I Droped The Pump, Cleaned All The Gunk & Crud Out, Straightened Bent Control Rod Arm, Turned Cam Folower Pin (Just Had A Small Flat Spot On It),Updated My 49 8n To a NAA Piston & O-Rings. Works And Holds Great Now, Thanks To All The Good People On This Forum.

I am about to do the same. The owner of my local shop, which specializes in 9, 2, & 8 N Fords, told me to open all 3 drains, catching most of the oil, then leave them open and let them drip overnight. He said you would get most of the gunk out that way.

I'm having trouble finding what I consider the correct oil for the job, which is the only reason I haven't done it yet. I can find, of course, several brands of "Tractor Hydraulic Oil," available at everywhere from WallyWorld to every auto parts shop in town. They are all light oil, however, for modern tractors.

I have tried to specify 90 weight hydraulic oil, but all I get is blank stares.

I found some oil at NAPA, which is 85-90 weight gear oil, but I'm not sure that's the right stuff.

We have no Tractor Supply store locally, so even though I understand they have the right stuff at a hefty price, I can't get it from them.

I'm travelling Interstate 10 from New Orleans to San Antonio and back at Christmas, and I recall seeing a Tractor Supply store along the highway, somewhere outside Houston if my memory serves. I think I'll stop there and see what they have, before proceeding with the wrong stuff.

Any suggestions past that?

My local Napa folks never heard of it, but found the P/N in their 'puter and were able to order it. That is how I got some...

I have done this a few times, and I feel you do a much better job by dropping the hydraulic pump, removing the inspection covers, and pulling the PTO shaft out. Get one of those small pump up sprayers from WalMart and put kerosene in it. Buy a couple of rolls of cheap paper towels, roll up your sleeves, and get in there sopping up the sludge at the bottom. It will take about an hour or so and you will be much happier with the results.

Good luck,
Dan

You do not need to remove the PTO shaft. Just remove the inspection plates & reach in & scoop the sludge out by hand. When you have got most of it out, start flushing it w/ kerosene. Do not run the pump w/o gear oil in it; kerosene has no lubricating value & you will damage the pump as a result. Some folks use a garden sprayer to flush it out.

Winterize as in you are not going to run it all winter? Or, you will be using it & you want to get it ready for cold weather? And, do you have an operators manual?

You do not want "hydraulic" oil in a N-Ford tractor. You want gear oil. Any of the GL-1 thru GL-5 series gear oils is fine. The most commonly found today is GL-5, SAE 80-90 wt gear oil. It works wonderfully and will last a long time and is good for your N-Ford. (It will not harm your N-Ford in any way, despite rumors you might hear about "yellow" metals.)
