I have had some interest in seeing the names you guys/gals give your tractors. I never really paid any attention until FarmerDawn came up with "Arthur"...then it struck me...What a fine thing to do! Give the friend a proper name!
I've really admired the names some of you have come up with. "Arthur" is a great name. So is "Chigger". I just couldn't come up with one. I guess it's sorta like naming a Dog... you have to see what the pup grows into... or does... to find a name that truly fits! (Ever notice how a baby becomes very much like their given name? I've always thought that was interesting.) It's like,...a really GOOD name really FITS like NO OTHER! It's sometimes a "hidden" thing that only reveals itself after time and performance (like dependability) demonstrates itself. Anyway,... only today, while not giving it any thought at all,...did it suddenly occur to me what the name of my grey 9N tractor is. It has always just been there...I just didn't know it. I thought I'd share it with all you online N-Ford friends. (This is beginning to seem a bit silly, but I still want you guys to know.) It's "Mosby". (Reminds me of the old "Grey Ghost" himself, cavalryman John S. Mosby. A bit cranky, dependable, and always ready for a spirited ride!)

I have yet to come up with a name for my 40 9N but I have called it a lot of different things. Sometimes I sweet talk it with a come on girl you can do it, or sometimes I letR have it with a round of you rotten no good piece of... Eventually it will have a name. The hard part is done I guess cause I have decided it is a girl. My old 76 Ford PickMup is ole yeller, My bass boat is ole aluminum sides, My 71 cub cadet is giddyup, my dakota is Rooster and my wifes van is Peo (cause the first thing she did with that van was went and picked up 240 babe chicks and all you could hear was peo peo peo peo peo)

so now you all know how nuts I am too!

"Puddle Jumper", that was dad's 1950 8N. As a kid (in Minnesota) I remember him hooking a single section spring tooth harrow (about 4 ft. wide) behind and, going as fast as he could, go through wet or low spots in the fields to break the crust or open them up so they would dry out faster. I also remember him getting stuck alot.

My 8N has been named, by me, Carlson, in honor of the maiden name of my mother-in-law. Her two brothers had this N on their farm in Idaho and the family graciously gave "her" to me to bring back to Iowa and "restore." Is a tractor a him or a her? Does it depend on anything. I think all ocean-going ships and other boats are shes. What do you all think?!

The 850 is Lumpy cuz that's how the sheetmetal looks. The TO-30 is still looking for a name. I don't have it running yet so I haven't got a bead on it's personality yet.

I call my 47 "N2N" cause it is all N from End-to-End. I call my shorty GMC pickup "Corvette" because it is low, fast, seats 2 and has a large trunk. And then there is "Ma"s car", the Buick.

All our vehicles get names. The 2N is Henry, of course. And my green one is John. Not very original, of course, but it makes it easier to refer to them both.

My Chrysler is named OFA, which stands for Old Fart's Automobile.

The Durango is called R2D2, or R2, for short, because of all the chirps and beeps it makes when you turn on the key.

The pickup is Orca, because it eats fuel like a whale eats fish.

And then there's my commuter car, named Squeaky, because I can't fix the squeal in the rear brakes no matter what I do.

But in each case, the name fits the vehicle, and it sometimes takes a while to find just the right name.

My 2N is Clyde (short for the Clydesdales she replaced). My IH 666 is "The Beast". My Harley is my "Old 80". My old Kenworth is "Clementine". My F150 pickup is "Fffff" cuz I hate the danged thing so much I can't bear to even say the name Fffff....see? Old Suburban is "BusUrban". The funny one is my grasshopper ZTR mower, I've always called "Kwai Chang". My kids think I'm nuts, they aren't old enough to remember Kung Fu.

I've owned my 9N for 17 years and it has done chief grass cutting duties, field mowing duties, lane snow plowin duties but the last couple of years tempted me to name it "Neverstart". Now with the help of you guys it is starting just fine.

My "N" lost one of her headlights going through a particulary heavy briar patch. She looked so forelorn and sad with just that one headlight left. Rather than replace the light, I prefered the way she looked and started calling her "Ole One-Eye". I recently repaired the headlight, but the name still sticks.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
Tractor naming. My '51 8N with a Sherman combo, got it's name, Nellybelle, when I was a boy about 11 years old. I still had a boy's imagination and probably non-mature thought processes (my wife and grandkids still think so). I definetly was not a "MAN" but had to do a man's work, everyday.
The boy me enjoyed Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Pat Brady and Nellybelle on a black & white TV. Imagination allowed me to do a man's day of plowing while pretending I was driving a Jeep.
I have not been inclined to name any of my other 14 N's. However, if one of the grandkids wants to name one or all, I'm boy enough to enjoy their enthusiasm and man enough to say it.
I am just a boy in a wrinkled, old body...and loving it.

I never got around to naming my 8N, but my 3000 belonged a neighbor woman until she passed away. She used it in her large "truck patch" and had a vegetable stand to sell her produce. In our neighborhood, my tractor is known as Anna"s Tractor.

My wife noticed the brush growing up on the fence line a few years ago & asked me if any of my tractors could pull a bush hog, or if I just kept around the place to work on. Wives can be perceptive at times.....

I guess if I had one, I'd probably think of a name, but with three of them, I just never got around to it. Mosby sounds like a fine name; I assume you use it to chase Yankee Cavalry off of your place?! Mosby was Stuart's lead scout on his first ride around McClellan; that ride passed about 2 miles from the house. Mosby was great soldier. And, as you know, very cranky & opinionated. Even as a young man.

Well, my '47 2n has been named "Nellie" for as long as I can remember. My dad gave it that name and now that I own it, I still call it that. I have seen this little ford do alot of amazing things over the years for only having 24 horse power. When ever you were pushing or pulling it so hard that it was about to kill, just start talking to it and some how it got that last little umph to git'r done!

Back when I was a kid plowing the 8N with the old heavy cast iron weighten Seico two bottom plow and had it in third gear trying to get the plowing done and keeping an eye out for my brother in law coming over the hill so he wouldn't see me running in third gear plowing and I happened to hit a stump just right and my knees hit the two bottom hood bolt heads I named the tractor but I can't print it out here!

Brother in law never could figure out why when he plowed his land was never turned over as completely and spread out as evenly as when I was plowing in second gear at two thirds throttle. (second gear at two thirds throttle was where I had express instructions to allways plow)Ignorance is bliss!

We call our 841 ferdy sort of like fredana the bull. Called it that becasue when the sherman is in low range it will push like a bull dozer, it has a loader on it. It will push so hard that the side walls of the tires twist from the push power

Hey, that's a great name! I've always been struck by how many of the guys on the forum name their tractors -- from Nellie Belle to Bingo to Delilah and good ol' Rustbucket. Mosby is certainly in that tradition! Thanks for including Arthur in the company as well. :-) --Dawn

Cant say I was ever big on naming things. Even the wife just calls her cat "Big Kitty". But the 52-8N got a name when I was trying to paint it last summer. Dont have a paint booth so it became "BUGS", literally. The paint job looks ok, until you get real close and see the tiny little bumps that shouldnt be there.

This was last weekend hauling some stumps out from behind the workshop. I pulled them out with a double-line pull on my 8000-pound winch.

That rig on the back of the tractor is the head-end for my blade. With the blade removed, it works great for hauling this kind of stuff.

If you are a girl then maybe you should call it powder puff, or sweetie pie. Or how about baby doll or little cream puff! It's the feminization of America. MAN UP BOY!!!!! !!!!! !!!!

As tractors, just like cars, get old they develop what could be called a personality. I drive several 1970 era cars, and each one starts and runs a little different. Like so with my tractors, each is slightly different. When one is acting up, like a bad child, using a "name" seems more appropriate than anything else.
