I have one out back in the parts tractor row. Its home made on a trailor and has a big screw that splits the wood. Its for sale by the way.

You can buy a PTO pump to run the hydraulics. But if you do that you're just as well off to get a self powered one because of the price of the pump. Also, I always thought it would be hard on a tired 50 year old engine to run at high rpm's for an extended time. Having said that though, Dunk may have a better plan which he said he'd share when he recuperates.

No need to run the tractor faster than a decent idle. Get a pump with enough capacity so the tractor engine can loaf along.

Ray,
I was always curious if such an animal was made. I couldn't find any when I was looking (about 10 years ago) and wound up buying a standard trailer type 5HP/20 ton. I think it works out better because you are able to tow it to where some wood is without taking your life in your hands by taking your tractor on the road at least in my neiborhood. They are finishing up a 200 house subdivision across the street from me and starting a 84 condo development across the street from my back line. I looked at the web site just to see how much it costs and they tell you everything but that. I paid about $650 for mine but I think they are close to $1000 today. That reminds me....mine needs the carb rebuilt.

There are lots of things that aren't up to par with this splitter, no filter, no real fluid resivor (just some pipe with expansion room), cylinder too short (needs to be twice as long)(we use blocks of wood and extend it to or 3 times), but other than a little work it was made from scrap I had laying around FREE, and it has busted tons of wood for many years.
The pictures aren't great where it is sitting.
It also borrows the bush hog shaft when operating.
