Jubilee running great....now won't start

This is yet another "won't start" thread so I apologize (it is hard to search the archive for exactly my circumstances)...

With the unseasonably warm weather we went out to our land that we are clearing and went to work moving some logs to our log pile area. I was using my 53 Golden Jubilee to move the logs (filling the loader bucket with logs). It was working great. While loading I had it at idle and my son and I both heard a subtle sputter. We both agreed the tractor was likely running low on gas. I cut the engine and went and bought more gas (4 gallons). The tractor fired right up and I used it for about 45 minutes more. Again, as I was unloading some logs I had the tractor at idle and it sputtered and shut down. I was unable to restart the tractor. I went back today and still cannot get it to start. My voltmeter shows 12 volts when I turn the ignition key to the 'on' position. After several attempts at getting it to start I can smell a slight increase in fuel vapors making me think I am getting fuel to fill the carb....but I haven't done a test of the fuel flow at the carb yet (do I disconnect the fuel line or just unscrew the screw on the underside of the carb for this type of test?).

Anyway, what diagnostic steps should I take?

BTW, while running the voltmeter did show 14 volts making me believe the alternator was working properly.

TIA,

Paul.

Paul- How long since you gave her a good tune up?
Last year I was mowing my neighbor's field for him and only had a strip of ten feet left to mow when my Jubilee quit. I had plenty of gasoline but coulnd't get her to restart. Had no choice but to take off the mower and walk home to get the 8N to tow her home. Checked for spark and gas flow. Then I ran a point file thru the points and used my old dollar bill trick to run thru the point to clean them off. She started right up. Seems like all the starting problems I've ever had have been with points. Other than that, she has been a great runner. And to answer the questions I've had about the dollar bill trick..... .... No, it may not be as abrasive as a brown paper bag, but a bill is lint free and that's why I've suggested using it to get those contacts squeeky clean..... . and $5 and $10 bills work equally as well. LOL Good luck

Paul..... ...sputters at idle and then dies, eh? After mucho crankin' you smell gasoline, eh? Ya done FLOODED yer engine with INVISIBLE no-lead deposits on yer sparkies. The only cure for FLOODED sparkies, is NEW DRY sparkies. AutoLite AL-437 recommended and always check the gap (0.025) even right outta the box. Don't throw yer flooded sparkies away, they can be cleaned and DRIED one-atta-time in a hot running engine. And save'em for NEXT TIME you flood. (and there will be a NEXT time)

But that still doesn't address yer initial sputterin' and stallin' at IDLE. My take, you have ICED yer carb closed from natural moisture laden air. All carbs gitt COLD, and iff'n local air is moisture laden, guess what? FROSTY CARBS at IDLE, but NOT at power settings 'cuz throttle is open wide. It takes about 1/2hr to melt the internal carb ICE and then you can starter again. (except when you flooder)

This is a KNOWN PHENOMENON, infact small airplanes actually have a "CARB-HEAT" lever that they pull before LANDING when the engine is idling on approach (your tractor?) and so they have icefree POWER for a go-around. Even yer Belchfire-V8 has carb-heat from the exhaust manifold underneath the carb manifold. (I bettcha didn't know that)..... ..Dell

I would pull the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb first. Then if you don't have a good flow there work your way back till you find the clog. If you have a good flow of gas then you need to check for a good brite blue spark at the plugs. From what you siad you could have a fuel problem and or a problem with the ignition system. If it had been running for say and hour and it did that you could also have a coil going bad on you

I'll bet the problem is that the float has stuck open & the carb has flooded . Remove the rubber air tube from the carb & see if gas runs out . You could also try tapping the bowl of the carb with a screwdriver handle .Hope that helps . Good luck & God bless . Ken
