I read some on the subject in the archieves. I guess it is a crapshoot as to weather it is coil or points/condenser huh? I did not burn out the resistor, checked it already. I came home for lunch, started the tractor to raise the lift to measure for a boom-pole I am building. I forgot the gas was off and it died after a minute or two and I forgot to reach over and turn the key off. Came home this evening expecting to try out my boom-pole and noticed my 194 bulb burning and knew in my heart that it would not start:^( On a good note, I did recieve my Dennis Carpenter catalog in the mail today. Handy in case a guy needs to order, say a square-can coil or points er something huh:^)

I wonder if anyone has thought of putting a low oil pressure switch in the wire going to the coil?
If the engine shuts down or loss of oil pressure the power would be cut to the coil.
You would have to install a push button switch to override it to start. Just a thought.

It seems to me that if the plastic part is what fails on the points as Dell says, a simple visual inspection would determine if they are good or bad. Unfortunately every time I have made this mistake it has taken out the coil. I know, I know, you would think after the first time a fellar would learn wouldn't you.

Ron..... ...condensers are relative bullet-proof. They are good for about 200-volts.

Infamous ballast resistor is relative bullet-proof. That is why it is WIRE-WOUND on CERAMIC form to take the HEAT.

Iff'n you were "unlucky", and the POINTS were closed, you could very well have MELTED the squarecan ignition coil's internal insulative tar. This is NOT total failure, as the coil's tar will SOLIDIFY overnite, and yer sparkies will probably sparkle just fine for about 1-hr of running time until the TAR MELTS again.

While the points usually are bullett-proof, the points plastic rub-bumper isn't and is known to MELT and yer points may NEVER OPEN.

The 194 IDIOT-LITE is NOT a battery killer.

New coil $30 (cheap) New points $10 (cheap) Learning to remember to turn the ignition switch OFF, priceless..... ...respectfully, Dell

Well if you where lucky the points where open and then the coil and points will be ok, but most of the time your not that lucky. I would start with the points and go from there. Thats why I buy my coils at O'reillys auto parts stores, they have a life time warrenty on them so if that happens and you burn up a coil they replace them for free
