A friend is trying to remove his pto shaft from his 8N with no sucess. It has come out about and inch and feels spongy. A 20 ton jack had no help only broken cahin pieces. Any suggestions? He wants to replace the shaft with the bigger one. Thanks for him. Pokey

Then there is the dreaded "twisted PTO" syndrome! If the PTO shaft is twisted you will not be able to pull the PTO shaft out of the hydraulic pump and the tractor will have to be broken into at the rear of the transmission so that the PTO shaft can be cut in front of the pump in order to extract the PTO from the tractor. If the shaft is twisted don’t make the mistake of trying various extreme methods of pulling the shaft such as a chain hooked to it and extreme force like jerking it with another vehicle etc. You can do some major damage to the hydraulic pump this way that can’t be fixed. This “twisted shaft” condition happens much more now since most of the original “Ford” manufactured shafts are gone where the good shafts go when they die and have been replaced by soft steel shafts made in far away places that don’t care if your PTO shaft twists when you hit that stump or rock really hard.

The easiest way in the long run to get that PTO out of the tractor is to break it at the back of the transmission and cut the shaft off in front of the pump with a cutting torch as close to the pump as possible without damaging the pump or pump excentric thingy. Grind it smooth and then it will come out easy.

Sometimes things work differnt for different people. Zanes way worked for me. These pumps are a "little" forgiving but not much. Alittle too much force and you might can tell us what a new pump cost.I've just had to cut mine out(twisted) pto and it's no fun.Your call.

There are many topics on here about this (see link below).

Some say you have to cut them out, because they are twisted.

Now my 48 8N is a britch on this (I guess it is twisted)

I use a railroad bar I found to prise it out, it is a 6' crowbar thing that will pull railroad cross tie spikes on one end and a crowbar on the other end.

I haven't broke anything yet...

I even tried to clean up the splines while I had it out.

I have to use a sledge to put it back, but not hitting it like I was busting wood, just bumping it, over, and over, and over.

So far that has worked for me.

Correct me if I am wrong folks....
