Help! My 8n ran great most of the year after replacing the fuel tank and filters. For the last couple of months it starts acting like its running on 3 1/2 cylinders. It appeared that the plugs were fouling out; I"d clean them and then it start running ok. If I let it idle to long they would foul again or sometimes would go for quite awhile without fouling. I got it stuck in the mud the other day and it started acting up again. I cleaned the plugs, which needed it and it didn"t help, checked them again and it kept happening, ran it for a while and every now and them it acted a couple of times like it wanted to hit all four. I then parked it and its been to cold to work on it. I have a small crack in the manifold, would this create a problem, I have a new one to replace it but havn"t yet.

Also, how much water does the water pump move, I ran it one night mowing in October and in the dark I could see the manifold get cherry red. I started keeping an eye on the water but I"m not sure if its cooling right. If I squeeze the bottom hose while it"s running I can feel some water moving through at idle, but I see little to no movement in the radiator when its hot.

Thanks as always for your comments

I just got done repairing a friends tractor with the glowing manifold problem.
The points were worn out and had very little gap.
You might want to check that.
The cracked manifold might be causing your miss.
If you already have a new one I would change it.
It only takes about a half hour to do the job.
The glowing is caused by the timing being way off and that's why you should check the points and set the timing before you ruin something expensive.

Didnt see if you said exactly which plugs you are runnin but the usual recommendation is Autolite 437 plugs. They are about one heat range hotter than the original specification and in my tractors they are self-cleaning. Even if I flood it they clear out and start sparking within a few seconds.

What are you cleaning off of the plugs? If it is black carbon deposits, you probably have the carb WAY too rich.

Try the Autolites I listed, or go one heat range hotter on the Champs you are using. Oil on the plugs is bad though. Anything you do is just buying time before the next rebuild.

It's probably time to check the cylinder pressure then?

Yep.
Not a bad Idea to check once in a while since it is a good way to spot trouble. At least you will know what you are dealing with. I have had engines that I decided to run a hotter plug in one cylinder to make them go a little longer until I had the cash to rebuild or get something else.

Well, Woodie..the manifold always gets hot! In the daylite,it is hard 2 C, but at nite, u can c it glow. Makes bueno cigarette lighter, if u do smokes. hehehe. As far as the sparkin' plugs..What brand u use? I had much problems with champions, switched to autolites and no further problems. Dunno why they don't do as well in these tractors as they do in Chevrolet Products. CC
