For those of you who may be remotely interested, the resistor I mentioned a few days ago as "unknown ohm reading" actually tested out as 1.6 ohm. I ran the tractor about an hour with only that resistor (no ballast resistor) and a supposedly 6V coil, no ill effects so far. Another note: I decided to get an ohm reading on the 12V coil I burned out by leaving the key on. Two things I noticed; one was the very small flashing "lo battery" warning on my ohm-meter and the other was that the little springy thingy on the bottom of the coil was no longer springy as it was full of melted solder. It does help to wear my glasses every now and then, dang I hate getting old :^)

Did you ever test your "old ballast" resistor for continuity?I would have thought that even with both resistors in series you would have gotten a spark. Maybe a week spark but not "no spark". That's why I suspected the ballast resistor was "open circuit".
Anyway, glad you are running.

Thanks for your answer. So ,if the coil you have on there now turns out to be a 12v, then pic one in your post to Jerry MT is the correct wiring???

third party image

yes except that the picture shows two 1 ohm 10 watt resistors wired together where I only have a single 1.6 ohm resistor.

The 1.6 ohm resistor is the correct value to use when you convert to 12V and use the original 6 V coil. The two 1 ohm resistors in parallel is the correct value to use if you use an alternator with the 12V square can coil to limit currrent from the 14 V alternator and prevent coil damage. If we assume that you are using the original 6V coil and the 1.6 ohm "converting" resistor, you still need the original "ballast resistor in the circuit to prevent the coil from overheating. Electricity is only mysterious to those who do not understand it. To a 40 year EE, tractor electrical systems are no mystery.

I understand what you are saying but the point is that while my ballast resistor shows good, if I wire it back into the circuit with the 1,6 ohm resistor I have no spark. Thats the "mystery" of this deal. What should work does not and what should not work does.

No mystery. Something is just broken or not connected.

I've been trying to follow this problem from the start. So what I gather from what you just said, is the motor is running fine now. Next is what you found on the 12v coil, but when you find out why it runs the way you have it wired now, and would not run with the ballast resistor in line, please post it. As i understand it, the ballast resister needs to be in the line to run the old 6v coil, as per the drawing.????? GB

Yep, thats pretty much the story. I am not 100% convinced this coil I have is a 6V coil as it is not marked and was on the tractor when I got it in July, not running. I replaced the switch, coil, points/condenser/plugs and wiring harness plus converted it to 12 volts all at the same time. I just took a chance that the old coil might fire after burning up my 12V with the key left on. I have no idea why it runs with only 1.6ohms resistor. Don't ya just love a mystery?

I recently rewired and replaced the entire electrical system (except generator and starter) on old Bessie ('48) and noticed that the old ballast resistor had been bypassed. She ran for at least 400 hours of hard work with NO ballast resistor in line -- go figure - shoulda melted the coil 10 times over. Maybe the weak sister ignition switch had just the right amount of gunk in it to provide the needed resistance???
