I just read your reply below asking if I ever checked my ballast resistor for continuity. Yes, I even tried a different one (notice I said different, not new) and got the same results. It simply will not produce spark with the ballast resistor AND the ceramic resistor in the circuit together. I am going to run it as is, (no ballast resistor, but with 1.6 ohm ceramic resistor in circuit. The worst it can do is quit running, which is what it had already done when I left the key on. Anyway I look at it this is progress, of sorts:^)

Thanks for the follow up, Ron. I'll have to file that one away! Maybe the coil is marginal so thats why having that much resistance doesn't allow for a spark at all.(You did say it was an old 6V coil that came with the tractor, didn't you.) Glad you're running though.
