The cutout pretty much looks for a difference in potential on each side of the relay... I fthe gen side is a higher potential than the bat side.. it connects.. when the gen potential drops out, it kicks out.

I would guess you could damage a cutout due to 'over capacity' if the bat side became shorted.. etc.. though in normal use.. and in 'normal' fault situations.. i don't think a faulty gen should be doing too much damage to the cutout.

Thank you. Here's what happened. I put a new cutoff on Tor to find out that my gen. wasn't doing it's thing. Thought oh well been running it this way for years, just cherging up the batt. every now & then. Run the tractor the other day & parked it in the shop & a few hours later went to start it & batt. was totaly dead. Disconnected batt. & charged it over night & drove it today. Seems alright now. Would like to find some americanmade parts for her. Going to town today so will pick up the parts to rebuild gen. Got to put her in the shop yet today. hope she starts. thanks again. Rusty

yes I did. Even ran it a couple times before the batt. drained. First thing I did when I found the dead batt. was open the round can & found the points closed causing the drain.

After installing, polarizing, turned key on & amp meter showed a -, but thats normal. Started tractor & never did show a charge. Did run tractor a few times before the batt.
