8N 1950, This tractor sat about 5 years waiting on an engine rebuild, Now that this is complete, My friend told me that I should add about 2gal. of diesel fuel, run the tractor for 5-10 miniutes (All gears and raise and lower the hydraulic lift) and replace hyd/trans fluid. Just before the tractor went down for its long waited repair, the side panels were removed, all the sludge was cleanedout and new fluid was added then (But Then sat 5 years)Is it a GOOD idea (safe) to add the diesel fluid and drive it around?

My 2N sat for 5 years Waiting for a rebuild & I went through the trans. & rearend & cleaned them up & didn't find any rust on the gears. The tractor sat out side for 3 of those years. If it was cleaned & fresh oil put in it I'd just drain it & refill it & go. By the way After a week of driving a 8560 all week it sure felt great spending an hour on my 2N tonight. Life gets better on these little tractors. Good luck & play safe.

Greg is right. Oil won't spoil with age, just use.
If no water, then I'd use what you got. My worry would be the part of the gears that weren't covered with oil during the five years. Some rusting could have occured, but probably won't be a problem.

Hi Nova,
Did it set outside or inside? Have you looked at the hyd./trans oil? If you cleaned it and changed it and it still looks good (no water) I think I would use it as is. Just my opinion.
