53 Jubilee still not running

A week ago I posted that I was using my tractor and had it idling while loading some logs into the loader bucket. It began to sputter and then it died. I still cannot get it to run. Here is what I've done so far. All this is done "in the field" since the tractor is on undeveloped land we own about 1o minutes from our house.

1. I added more gas. I had originally thought it ran out of gas. Didn't help.
2. I changed the spark plugs since Dell felt that I had flooded the engine and coated the spark plugs. Didn't help.
3. I pulled the carburetor and disassembled and gave it an aggressive spraying with carb cleaner. I tried cleaning the fuel filter screen at the carb...but mine doesn't have one! The brass float was light and with shaking did not feel like it was full of any fuel (i.e, had a leak). Reassembled and installed. Didn't help.
4. I replaced the ignition switch. Didn't help.
5. I tried starting with the air cleaner detached in case the air filter was clogged. Didn't help. (Oil bath cleaned and new oil added).
6. I took the battery to Autozone and had it checked on their load tester. A little under charged (from the cranking) but once charged it passed the test.
7. Sediment bowl cleaned out. Sediment bowl screen cleaned. Didn't help.

I should note that the starter cranks freely and the oil pressure guage does start to blip up to about 10 psi with cranking.

I haven't done any testing of the coil, wires, Pertronix (yes, I have the points and condensor ready to put back in when I get a chance!).

Any areas I am missing? I think I have to turn to the ignition system since this is the one area I haven't really had a chance to tackle.

This tractor has been in great working order. It is a 12volt conversion (Delco 10si, diode method).

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

Sounds like you've covered every test except the very first one that you should have tried.. that is.. to see if you are getting spark.

Pull a plug wire and check.

if ya got spark.. try starting her on start fluid.. if she starts.. you have a fuel restriction.

I didn't have the luxury of performing too many tests out in the field. During the daylight hours I was really under the gun to clear the last remaining trees from our land in preparation for the excavating crew that came in today.

Checking the ignition system is on my agenda.

Actually, the first test any of us should do should be the one that exactly shows the cause for the problem! It would make life much easier ;-)

Thanks,

Paul.

Fortunately.. that 'most important' test i mentioned, checking spark.. takes about 5 seconds.. you snatch the coil hi tension wire out of the cap and hold it to the manifold when you hit the start button.. if you see a blue arc.. ya got spark.

It takes longer than that to check air flow and fuel.

That's why i check spark first.. it's the easiest test..

Test question.

How long does a points ignition system last???

How long does an electronic ignition last????

Who can fix a points ignition system with a screwdriver and a piece of sand paper?

Who can fix an electronic ignition system with all the King's horses and all the King's men?

Answers= Up to sixty (60) years.

Who knows?

Me. You maybe!

Nobody.

Paul, RP's suggestions should do the trick.
Had a similar problem with my NAA.
The filter on the sediment bowl that goes into the gas tank was plugged.
There is two filters on the sediment bowl !
The fuel bowl was full of gas but almost no flow when the fuel line was disconnected from the carb.

paul, first check if you are getting fire at the plugs, by grounding one to a clean spot on the motor and turning the motor over with key on. if youre getting good strong blue fire, the next thing to check if you are getting a good flow of fuel. RP

Fuel flows nicely from the drain port on the bottom of the carb. I'll check the for a good spark when I get back out to the land. I had to stop and actually do some timber clearing for our excavator. We started our new home construction today. Yesterday I didn't have the time to go through all the diagnostic options.

Is there a way to clean the fuel filter that is inside the tank without draining the gas?...the one attached to the sediment bowl that sticks up into the tank...

Thanks for all the helpful replies.

Paul.
