First attempt to refurbish a starter. How does one contour the brushes to make full contact with the commutator, and is it necessary to do that?

The old electrical service manuals used to show how to wrap the commutator with sandpaper with the grit side OUT, then, turning the amature with one hand, while holding the brushholder/brushes in the other.

However, it's NOT necessary. The brushes will seat fine on their own.

OEM (original Equipment Manu.) parts should come thru with the proper contour. Sometimes, however, after market parts come thru with square ends on the brushes.

Usually, I take a round file and at least get the contour to match up with the armature.

Like the say'N goes, don't worry, they will "wear-in" with use.
