I got in a hurry the other day and forgot to turn off the gas on my Ford 640. Two nights later, I *finally* remembered, and turned it off. The next morning the tractor would not start and there was gas dripping from the hose going to the air cleaner tank. I pulled off the carburetor, cleaned it out, and made sure the float was working properly. The tractor ran for about 45 seconds after I put the carb back on, then it died and gas started dripping again (from where the carb attaches to the air cleaner hose). I'm pretty sure the floats are good, and adjusted right. If they are right, any ideas what could be causing the center "pot" of the carb to fill up with gas? ...And is this because I left the gas on, or is it just a weird coincidence?

sounds like debris drifted down and settled into some place as the gas was left on. a thorough carb blowout, and cleaning may fix it and, let the gas run through the fuel line for a few seconds as well when you remove the carb. The smallest piece of debris can shut down that tractor easy enough.

If your carb has not been leaking before it probably did not start leaking just because you left the gas on. There may be a piece of trash in the needle and seat that made its way into the carb while the gas was left on. While cleaning out the needle and seat you can also chack the float setting. A small piece of trash will affect the carb in the same way as a leaking faucet will fill up a sink.

Thanks (to a few of you guys) for the advice. Turns out that when I blew out the carb, there were VERY SMALL red paint chips that flew out of some of the valves. I put the carb back together and now she runs fine. Thanks!

2 main reasons why the carb bowl fills up and overflows is a bad needle and seat or a bad float and float height.

On Dad's 640, I've tryed used different needle valve and seats for the carb and have always had some seepage problems. So you may start there by replacing the needle and seat. Turning off the gas when you're through is a good idea. You say you're float height is set properly? On his TSX-580 MS carb, float height is 1/4" from the nearest part of the float to the gasket. Check to make sure your float isn't leaking. Make sure the float is working. When you put the 2 halves back together, you can turn the carb over and listen. The float should be moving up and down.
