Late this summer my "49 belched oily coolant out of the radiator. I figured that I had blown a head gasket. Today I finally found time to work on it. I also was going to install a new water pump as the old had gotton slightly wobbly.
My block is full of oil! I drained out about a cup from the petcock and when I removed the pump probably another quart came out and it is still running now. The gasket was not blown.
What is the problem and how do I get this crap out of the water jacket? This stuff is black and the consistency of corn head grease.

Use Dawn Dish Soap It is a great emulsafier and if you remember the oil spill they used it to clean ducks etc to get the crude oil off of them.and as said on here cheap cheap

I would have to agree with Bob on this one. Very well may be a sealant of some sorts in there. I have used a product called "Bars stop leak". Looks like very dark brown rabbit droppings. Once mixed in and melted, it looked black. Possibly a radiator or head gasket or water pump problem at one time in its life..Might be able to just keep flushing it as much as you can to get it all out. Not sure how cold it is by you but if it does not get down to freezing, just use water and run it and flush and do it over and over. Do it enough, you may find out where the leak is(if there was one). Only thing is, it may end up costing ya to fix the problem.
Good luck, my friend

The black stuff might be rotten, old anti-freeze, mixed well with stop-leak.
