Pictures help a lot to help you. If its a 9,2,or8N the serial numbers will be on the right side of the engine about the middle of the engine and just below the head. If its one of the other like a 600 or 800 series the numbers will be behind the starter on a flat spot on the bellhouseing. If its a 9N or 2N the serial number will start with 9N and then look sort of like this. 9NXXXX, that will also include the 2N since the serail numbers for the 2N also start with 9N. Also a 9N or 2N will have 3 forward gears and an 8N will have 4

Old--you have it right about the pictures. I know you must be standing in front of the N tractor when you gave this answer, but if you are sitting in the seat, you will find the serial number on the left side of your tractor, below the head and slightly to the right of the oil filter -----respectfully---Tim (WI)

Your right I got the wrong right LOL. All serials numbers on the Ns, NAAs and the 6XX-8XX are on the left side as sitting on the seat.
