I have a Ford 200 4cyl gas engine that has front alignment problems. I loaned the tractor out for a month and it came back bowlegged and with balding front tires. The two tires are spread out on the front side such that steering is hard to control and the tires are getting worn out. Upon further research I have deduced that there may be a problem within the power steering housing. All other pieces of the system look fine - the spinning adjusters that run up to each wheel are fine, the steering arms down between my legs are fine, power steering fluid is fine. Any ideas?

Matt

The way I would start at this one:
First pop off both of the tie rods at the front wheels. Align wheels with 1/8 to 1/4 toe in. Examine the arms on top of the spindles. They have a key that can shear allowing the spindles and arms to mis-match. Verify no problem here. On my Ford shopbook there is a measurement for each (left & right sides) tie rod assembly (don't have access where I am now - sorry) possibly this is an issue. You will also want to check the monting of the arms on the steering gear itself to see if they are still correct. I would not think the power steering is the problem... Just my 2 cents worth.

Sounds like you have a toe out condition. To check for your toe measurements, pick a spot on the front of your tires and measure the distance.
Then check the measurement at the rear of your front tires. If the distance is longer on the front then the back, then you have toe out. If the distance is longer in the back, then you have toe in. I dont know what a tractor is supposed to be set at, but on our semi trucks we set them to 0 to 1/16 toe in.
Check for bent steering arms. "Why do I say that" About two weeks ago one of my mechanics needed to tow a truck into the shop, so he thru a tow strap around the front axel and pulled it into the shop. The truck came back from a 200 mile trip, and the driver said the truck steered funny. I looked at the front tires and know exactly what had happened. While throwing the strap around the axel, it went around the tie rod and the axel. When he pulled it to the shop it bent the tie rod. EXPENSIVE, two front tires at $350.00 each and $200.00 for a tie rod.

Were they pulling stumps and got the front end up and then crashed back down and bent the axle(s)?

There is no structural damage/change to the tractor. They just pulled a wagon with it...
