My 52 N transmission makes noises like some teeth are broken in 2nd and 3rd gears. I'm debating if more cost efficient to find another trans or rebuild this one. I've never rebuilt a trans, although I rebuilt the engine last year.
Anybody got a spare in the southeast (ga)? Thanks for a great forum.

The third gear had made a noise since I bought the tractor two years ago but the second only started yesterday. Still torn about rebuilding or replacing. After looking at parts cost(gears, bearings, oil etc) I"m figuring about $600 or more. That"ll hurt so close after Christmas, but I"m like the rest of you - the N"s my baby. Does the PTO shaft have to be removed before splitting from the rear end?

Second gear is reputed to be weak in these tractors, although I've never broken any of the ones I've owned over the years, even though they got the snot beat out of them plowing gardens, doing loader work, or mowing and raking hay.

Replacing the transmission gears is a relatively straightforward project, and if you've rebuilt the engine, you can handle it.

To access everything, the tractor has to be split at the clutch housing, and between the transmission and rear end, so the transmission section is entirely separate of the tractor.
