Just had my side mtg dist 8n engine redone.Rebuilder says when he restarted that at idle-- amp gage showed 20amps and at higher RPM it pegged the gage. That same gage never had the needle move more than a small amount prior to this engine work. I told him to try a new VR before he brought it back--he put a new one on and it does the same-.It will run when you take the battery strap off--so it"s really charging. I than put a volt meter on the battery [pos grd]before starting and it read about 6v--than after starting it showed 7 to 8v.I know it"s not the amp gage as I drove around for 30 minutes or so at low speed-than when I stopped-I saw the top of the battery bulging upward in two of the cell top areas. NOT GOOD-It"s really overcharging.--Lots of pressure relieve when I slowly loosen the battery caps.
it"s now parked until I know what to look for next.I tryed finding some things to check thru the old articles-maybe someone can help me check some other items. The generator was not redone--just put back on after the rebuilding.Lucky no Snow to push here in Ohio-- yet! By the way--with good compression it really starts easy--now if I could just be able to use it once again!---PeP

PeP..... ..sounds like you got yer 8N's 3-wire genny top 2-terminal wires (field & ground) SWAPPED. The field wire is a "viberating" ground contact in the squarecan voltage regulator and controls the magnetic field strength of the "field" windings. Iff'n you "ground" the field terminal (full-fielding) your genny will output MAXIMUM volts and amps. This will BOIL yer battery acid and WARP yer battery plates killing yer battery..... ...Dell

Dell--you were right--switched the wires back to where they should have been--all OK now.--Thanks-PeP

Probably a cell or two shorted out. Particles builds up in the bottom to the point that it will start shorting out the plates.

Forgot to mention--it's a 6 year old HD 6V truck battery--maybe it's bad internally?-PeP

The regulator begins to taper the charge back at 7 Volts, or a little more, limiting system voltage to 7.4 Volts, if the regulator is working correctly.

If the battery has a shorted cell, the charging system will work it's guts out trying to bring the 2 remaining cells up to 7.4 Volts, and it sounds like that may be what you have going on.

Well-I just put in a brand new HD 6V battery--and it's the same result--amps reading 15-20 close to idle and pegs the gage-30 amps at half throttle--I didn't run very long as I don't want to mess up this battery. The battery I took out still tested ok with 550 cranking amps.---PeP

What is the VOLTAGE after it's been charging a while... if over 7.4 Volts, you definitely have a problem with the regulator or wiring in that area... a short in the "F"ield wire, for instance.

Also, is the regulator properly grounded?

OK-I went thru the field wiring-no shorts evident.--I took off the VR and adaptor plate and made sure all good contacts for good grounding-good tight bolts and connections. With the brand new battery running I'm getting 7.5 volts when amp gage is reading 20 amps-when I flick on the front 2 headlights-amps drop to 10 or so positive charge-volts hang in there over 7--If I turn on just the one light I have on back than amps drops from 20 to 15.-My light switch is 3 way-either off-front only-or back only.If I turn the speed up-it still pegs the 30 amp reading. I guess I didn't see if it would peg the gage with the front lights on- next round I'll see.One thing I'm doing now is putting a charge on the new battery as it may have been low as well. Than I'll restart and see if charging current gets to where it needs to be. If it's not -what to look at next?--PeP
