Now that you are up and running in alternator mode...what do you know about Leece Neville 160-200 amp alternators? These are basically self exciting units with large positive, negative terminals and a single wire that provides signal to the tach. Thomas-built buses out of High Point NC are using them and having lots of problems with them. They work fine in warm weather but in cold weather they fail. These engines are equipped with an intake air heater (electrical heating grid) which switches on automatically at startup and cuts off after the intake air reaches a certain temp. That and the 5 passenger heaters pull a fair load but the 160 amp unit should handle it ok. Have you heard anything about a Leece Neville problem?

Hmm it seems your question is a clue to the problem. You need to pull up the specifications on normal Square D circuit breakers. The Impluse (inductance/Resistive) loading numbers will blow your mind. They may just have a very long cable between the ALT & Battery such that the Alternator, not the battery is attemping to supply that load. The other possability is that the ALT regulator is to "slow" because the excite current source is hard-wired to the battery.

I think its likely an application issue (wrong loading points) and not an Alternator problem
