Santa brought me a small benchtop parts cleaner. Question is , what do you use for solvent? I heat shop with a wood/coal stove so I always have an ignition point. Thanks, Joe

Whut Dunk says and varsaw (how ever ya spill it) I speck mineral spirits and varsaw are the same thang. I been can’ i’kin fer rite quit along spill and varsaw izz hard to beat. I have tried all the friendly stuff and it never werked out to good. Even if it lites up it does no spload like gas, sorta like lite’in char coal liter fluid (mineral spirits/varsall ) it will scar ya at first but then a nice slow burn. I have tried all of the utter stuff, gas, nawl it lites up to EZ , diesel/Kar’seen, nawl every thang around ya will smill like a truck stop (are Bubba). Git’ya sum Nitrile gloves to whar win’yer wash'shun yer parts.

We used mineral spirits in our homemade one.

Well now you know why I never got one when I could. Some people say use gas, some say kero, others say paint thinner and then theres also a stuff you mix with water. I was going to get one that held 20 gallions but when I checked what it would cost to fill it with a cleaner that wouldn't blow up in my face I figured the cost would be like $100 for the unit and $300-500 for the fluid to put in it. Just what I found a couple years ago when I was thinking about getting one.

I have a 20 Gallon unit, like the one Harbor Freight sells for around $100 you can't actually put 20 gallons in it, that would fill it to the rim, rendering it useless, it only takes about 5 gallons of solvent(mineral spirits) about $40 at my local Farm&Home store to make it work, the level of cleaner in the tank, only has to be above the pump inlet.

Add a few gal. of water to it. The water will settle to the bottom and all yer grit will stay in the water. acts sorta like a filter. I save the barrel type filters from car/trucks and run the clean'in fluid thru it sum times to git the fine grit out of the clean'in fluid. Even a paper type filter will help. At one time i had a 55 gal barrel wif sand/gravel/sand/gravel/sand/gravel to pour my clean'in fluid thru it to use on utter jobs when I did transmission werk. I only used clean fluid fer that and the old fer utter stuff. Now I don't do enny automatic trans werk so not much need fer filtering the clean'in fluid. I am particular tho what I put tin the clean'in tank. I converted a old pig cooker to scrap/grind and git the parts rite clean before I wash'em off wif Varsaw. sum times all they need izz a good wash'in down wif purple stuff on the pig cooker, then hose off. Enny one want to come over fer a pig rost’in
