I have had a slight oil leak from the where the governor mounts to the engine on my 51 8n. I tried to take the unit off this weekend with no sucess. I was able to get the two bolts out, the tach cable, oil line & throttle linkages disconnected. The gov. would move about 1/32" and was lose. It felt like it was binding so I bolted it back up. Is there something else holding it?

On my 51 8n the gov came right out after removing the bolts. Aluminum to steel mating serfaces require a thin film of silicon on the gasket to stop leaks. Also whatever you do, don't put the long bolt in the short bolt hole.

It is a common leak at that mating area - from tightening the two bolts to hard trying to stop a leak and bending that aluminum cover. You will need to remove it from the tractor, take the guts out of the housing (via the one screw holding it in), and sand the mating area using a piece of sand paper on a very flat surface until the entire mating area is shiny. Use a new gasket with black Permatex non-hardening gasket sealer on both sides of the gasket and DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN the two bolts when you re-install.

The small movement you are feeling when you try to remove the governor is the inner retainer moving against the one screw holding it to the outer cover. DO NOT just yank back on the governor as it will break at this screw area - you will see what I am talking about when you get it off. Get a real thin flathead screwdriver/putty knife and try to pry this inner retainer out of the hole in the timing cover plate - it is a tight fit.

Good luck,
Dan

Is this retainer in the bottom bolt hole? Does it come out seperate from the governor?

No - the inner retainer sits inside the outer base and is locked in place with a small flathead screw. When you remove this locking screw, the retainer and all the "guts" of the governor will come out of the outer base.

I asume you can't see the retainer and have to feel it. So you pry it toward the back of the tractor? How do you know your on it before you pry?

Correct - you have to look into the small gap while you are pulling the governor off to see the grey aluminum inner housing.

Thanks for the replies. While I had the gov. lose, I cleaned the surfaces as best I could and forced some silicone in the gap. It seems to have stopped the leak.
