5 foot Disc

I just purchased some land and about 50 acres of it is Costal Bermuda. It feels like a washboard when I drive across it. I need to disc it but only have access to a 5 foot disc. I a wondering if this is to much for my 2N. A 5 foot disc and 50 acres will mean several hours of moderate stress on my 60+ year old tractor. The tractor seems to be in pretty good shape. I will need to look at the carburetor because it does smell like it is running rich.

Thanks,

2nforever

Like the others have said it will be alot of seat time, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

The disk will knock down the mole hills, ant hills, & other high spots(especially w/ some weight added), but it won't exactly transform the surface.

How about trying the disk on a half acre or so, then see if smoothed it enough to be worth the time & gas.

You need bigger equipment for this job or you will be there for weeks. Like the guy below said, better to hire a neighborhood farmer to bring in his big equipment to break it up for you. Then, you can drag your disk or perhaps some kind of a toothed harrow around to level the seed bed out better.

You did not say what you were going to do with the land so I am not sure what you want to accomplish by disking. If you want to kill the Bermuda grass, probably a good idea, why not do what the N"s were made for?? Plow the whole place with a good double bottom plow. Then disk it to level it out and make a good new seed bed for..... your choice.

I am looking to make a hay field. My experience with Bermuda is the more you disturb it the faster and better it grows. I am just trying to smooth out the ride.

Thanks,

A n in average condition should pull a 5' disc pretty good.

Here are a few things to think about.

Notched disc's cut vegitation better.

Disc's aren't really meant to disc thru heavy established sod.. at least not these small disc's... If you had a big 12 or 15' disc and a 70-100 hp tractor.. then yeah.. no problem...

50 ac and 5' disc.. that's going to be between 50-60 hours for a single pass depending on speed.

Generally.. you make passea nd cross passes to help level the ground.

You may be looking at 2-3 full 'work' weeks worth of discing.

Any chance you have a large farm / farmer nearby with 'big' equipment.

I paid 75 bucks 5 ys ago for the farmer down the steet to use his 12' disc to turn 10ac of my pasture into soft powder to level it and for weed abatement before i re-grassesd.

He had it finished before lunch on his day off...

As long as it will pick it up then you should be good to go. I have a 6 footer I have used on N series tractors and the olny trouble I have had was haveing to much weight on the disc and lifting the front off the ground.

Your "N" should easily handle a 5 foot disc. I have pulled a 7 foot disc behind my 2N many times with successful results and no problem. My 12.4x28 tires are loaded and have good tread,
