Thanks to all for the input on the purchase of the tester. In the I&T FO-4 service manual, when doing the compression test, it is suggested that you connect a remote starter switch to the starter relay to crank the engine with the key in the OFF position. Is this a "must do"? I am looking at another tractor and have the ok to do the compression check on it. I don"t want to wreck anything in the process. Your replies, as always, are appreciated. Thanks, Tim

Yeah, I thought that was kind of strange, so thought I would ask. I am sure there was a reason for them to add that in the manual though it didn't make sense to me--thanks, Tim

While I will admit I am the "klutz" of this forum, I didn't do it that way and haven't heard anyone else talk about doing it that way (not that they didn't). All I did was put the tractor in neutral, block the rear wheels for safety (I mentioned I'm a klutz, right?), and pushed the starter button. I believe I had the key in the OFF position, not on. Of course, now I'm going to go check the archives to be sure. But I know I did not have a remote starter. I am usually lucky to have a cinder block for the wheels! LOL --Dawn

Dawn--If you get time to check, see if you have any notes on where key position was when you cranked old Arthur over. To tell you the truth, I never had a reason to try to turn my 8N over without the key in the ON position. I don't know if it will even turn over in the OFF postion. It won't be hard to check though, will it--thanks-Tim

Of course the engine turns over with the key in the off position. It just won't actually run.

Here's just one example from the archives from the time when I was learning how to do the compression test properly; there are many others but I don't want to look for them all.

The starter button turns over the starter motor (as long as there is a working battery) whether the key is on or not. If the key is on, the engine can start up. If the key is off, the starter only turns over the engine in a way that permits you to test the compression in the cylinders without having the tractor lurch forward. The reason some instruction sets tell you to remove the coil before doing the test is to prevent the sort of thing you can prevent far more simply by putting the key in the off position.

If the system is wired the correct way key on or key off the starter will spin the engine over. BUT make sure its OUT OF GEAR. Also I think they put the remote starter thing in because of the way most starters are wired and they didn't think about how the fords are wired differant

Old--if this tractor only turns over with the key ON and is indeed wired incorrectly----do I need to be worried about damaging any of the other electrical components if I do the compression check with the key having to be turned ON? Will be looking at this tractor next week---thanks, Tim

You have waht I said wrong. The N serie tractor will turn over with or with out the key turned on. Shoot you can pull the key out and throw it away and you can still hit the starter button and it will spin the engine over
