I've been putting this off..... And this has been quite a few years back. Mine got hard to turn one way, but easy the other, I man handled her, till the steering wheel and shaft came all the way out of the column while I was running her (reminded me of the three stooges). I had this dilemma with the wheel still being seemingly welded to the shaft, and it did NOT want to co-operate. I took the nut and washer off, kept her sprayed with penetrating stuff for a couple of days, after I finally got her back in the shop going in circles in only one direction. Put the acorn nut back on and beat the dayum thang, after so long of a time till she finally had all the threads pretty much destroyed. But I did get er off. I done the rest of the taking apart and cleaning of the steering sector and replacing the sealing stuff, with new parts, I didn't change the bushings. Got her all back together and the steering wheel back on, put on the washer and the nut, and I couldn't get the nut to catch a thread no matter what I tried... A 2lb hammer finally fixed that issue. Maybe it will last the rest of my life. It must have been one of my slow days, I have a torch and know how to use it.
Sometimes, sometimes... I just seem to have these brain farts...
