Ugh. I've got a retired puller in my family ... and I know I'm going to offend some ... but I firmly believe that what is done to tractors to make them pullers is a helluva abomination and should be criminilized. It's as bad as tearing down historic buildings. My heart particularly aches for all the Olivers out there that have had their parts mutilated.

Errr, I thought you was wanting folks to run shorted, dead cell battries, and burn their gennys and alternators trying to charge them....

I have no problem with 12 volts, heck I run it in about 6 vehicles regularly. (and fer the right reasons)

But running known bad battries?

What's up with that?

Dunk, In my original relpy I said " They stay charged in your tractor twice as long" Then I got jumped for saying they LAST twice as long. If you only need 6 V to run your tractor a 12V battery that has been run down from say a worklight left on an hour, then the 12V battery will have enough charge in it to still start and operate your tractor. A shorted cell will wreak havok on a 12V alternator. But a 12V battery with a dead cell will still start and operate your tractor while a 6V with a dead cell will not. Common sense would tell you not to try and keep charging a battery with a bad cell but you can use one to get you out of the back forty.

I really hate to continue this....but...

My 6 volt 5 year warranty batteries stay charged for a little over 5 years, until I replace them.

I use them to crank and run my tractor.

Sometimes I don't crank my tractor for a month to 6 weeks at a time. She is always ready to go.

From what you are saying, 12 volt batteries should stay charged for 10 years.

I just don't see that happening, my 12 volt batteries in my trucks only last a little over 5 years.

It may all just be a difference of experiences and circumstances.

For sure it is NOT personal.

And for the record the topic wasn't "why or why not use 12 volts" it was how many folks are still running their 6 volt tractors 6 volts.

Dunk, Im not sure how you extrapalate that 12 volt batterys will last 10 years. What I am saying is that if a 6V battery is say 35% discharged it wont start when a 12V battery that is 35% dicharged will.

I may be wrong, but JMO.

The way most folks (at least me) would have read and understood what you said, was that you were saying that a 12 volt system, ESPECIALLY the batteries were twice as good as 6 volts.

Even a 12 volt that had a dead cell, and only had 10 volts was superior to a 6 volt.

That's just not the way it is.

These 6 volt tractors are just as good, and work just as well the way they were made, IF you keep them up, they love nothing better than being taken apart, cleaned, and put back together, kept in the dry, and loved, they will work hard, and take abuse, and keep giving.

And then we come down to my own BUT....

I wouldn't give you $2 for an original 6 volt genny for mine, I am very pleased with the service from my 6 volt, posi ground, Chevy, one wire, alternator it has given me 20+ years of service for the half of the price gennys cost me in 2 years.

God Bless Us All.

Dunk, I thought that was a typo when you mentioned your 1 wire 6v alternator. What did it come out of? jmixico was saying that a generator zaps a few more horsepower from your engine than an alternator.

I had my local alternator shop guy build it for me, I asked him if he could and he said yes, I have never looked back.

He is still in business, in the same location.

6V alternator kit in reply to Dunk, 01-04-2007 18:01:47
A company called Quick Start actually has a kit to convert a Delco Remy 10 SI alternator from 12V to 6V at the following link, bottom of the page. Don't know if it works or is hard to do, but there it is!
