You mean I have to rering all the engines I have been in since 1954??!! I was taught then, (inside groove up, outside groove down) and have not done it any other way. I guess I failed to see the mechnical advantage of the dot being up! Don't want to be argumentive, just a little surprised at the answers. I guess it must not make much difference, either way.

Wayne,

Yes, it DOES make a difference which way the rings go!

Why not follow directions, instead of trying to "second guess" the engineers who designed them???

ALL piston ring instructions I have ever seen say to look for the dot ("pip" mark) FIRST, and put it "UP".

If NO "pip" marks, THEN resort to going by the bevels and chamfers.

Take a look at the HASTINGS information linked below.

They state that with "reverse torsional" rings there is an exception, and the internal bevel goes DOWN, but, of course, the "pip" mark goes up, as ALWAYS.

So, reading the instructions packed with the rings, and following them is IMPERATIVE, as there are MANY variations in ring design!

Look at Type #126, at the Hastings link below.

I guess this site proves one thing... even "old dogs" CAN learn new tricks, IF they are willing!

And, if you still don't believe how important CORRECT installation of EACH piston ring is, cut out THIS link, and past it into your browser:

Rings fer a N are one of the few I have seen that do not go by the standard way you have seen. Wither it makes enny difference I don’t know, I kin tell what it reads on a new set.
“Install rings with dots up“, if no dots I assume as you the inside bevel goes up but the second ring in the pack has a inside bevel and a dot that would put the bevel down dot up. Also shows a pix wif a inside bevel that goes up but not marked wif a dot. All I kin say izz read the struck ions wif the set and siffer out how the ring manufactory in tins fer ya to install’em. . Other that that do a search fer piston rings and it will splain why the bevel are scrapers are designed into the rings.

Were their would not be a dot the inside bevel goes up, were theirs izz a dot the dot always goes up so then pay no atension to the bevel, Go Dot up. I have never seen were the dot would do down
