Wayne, Yes, it DOES make a difference which way the rings go! Why not follow directions, instead of trying to "second guess" the engineers who designed them??? ALL piston ring instructions I have ever seen say to look for the dot ("pip" mark) FIRST, and put it "UP". If NO "pip" marks, THEN resort to going by the bevels and chamfers. Take a look at the HASTINGS information linked below. They state that with "reverse torsional" rings there is an exception, and the internal bevel goes DOWN, but, of course, the "pip" mark goes up, as ALWAYS. So, reading the instructions packed with the rings, and following them is IMPERATIVE, as there are MANY variations in ring design! Look at Type #126, at the Hastings link below. I guess this site proves one thing... even "old dogs" CAN learn new tricks, IF they are willing! And, if you still don't believe how important CORRECT installation of EACH piston ring is, cut out THIS link, and past it into your browser: Link
